Has anyone had success with CBT alone in treating their anxiety and racing thoughts?
I am considering it becuase I really would rather avoid medication if possible (plus, it has never really helped me!).

CBT is great - and it works. It works in controlling your thoughts and actions, and to a certain point it even helps you keep out of depression and learn to live a good life.
But it doesn't help you to feel happy in life and feel not anxious at all. IT helps after you start feeling anxious and just to prevent the consequences.
So CBT is first step. But if you don't want to FEEL anxiety, you need to do more soul searching and preferrably regressive therapy and find out why you FEEL the way you FEEL.

I find it works very well for anxiety. The breathing techniques, and cognitive techniques are excellent.
Also meditation and mindfulness techniques can help prevent the anxiety from building up.

Hi Spriggy,
I'm going to have to disagree with pinkeye on this one. For me, once my anxiety was under control with CBT, I felt much happier. I have become much less disturbable and consequently, less depressed and much happier.
I think it's hard to put a blanket statement about the effectiveness of treatments, as I really believe it depends on the person.

Hi there
I would like to premise that I despise CBT, resisted it for years...
And it worked extremely well with my anxiety which was pretty darn intense.
I am currently doing grad work (in counselling psychology) and am having fun marrying CBT and plain old talk therapy, as well as some somatic work.
I encourage you to try anything that may work for you. Had I been more open to try new things, I may have reduced years of suffering. But we all work at our own paces
:) Monika
