No, Sienna, there have been many people who have gone through IOP on this board... Judy1, I believe, Gabby (?), several more. Why don't you post this same question over on Social and on the plain meds board? I think it would be fine to do that, since part of the IOP is meds treatment.

Also, search this site using google.com. You have to do it in "Advanced Search" mode, also specifying that you want to search "dr-bob.org" in the blank at the bottom of the form that says:

"Domain - only return results from the site or domain" and then type the dr-bob thing in. This works very well...

Please don't despair, many people here have very good stories to tell about IOPs, from what I can recall. And don't call yourself nutso, the fact that they want you to attend this thing indicates how much they think it will help you, not how "crazy" you are... I mean, yes, it's good recognize your problems or diagnosis, or whatever, and to give the thing a name. But you are NOT the diagnosis, or better put: the diagnosis is not the totality of what and who you are... From what I read here, you are a very sweet and supportive person, one with a sense of humor and a way with words. You've been very helpful to people here...

So try asking over on the other boards, I'm sure you'll get some responses...

Best to you,
Wendy

Day treatment programs

I did a 10 day program and it was wonderful. It consisted of several therapists coming in one at a time and teaching behavioral skills and how to look at situations differently. There were worksheets we could fill in to reinforce what was being taught. We all got to comment on each concept and how we could apply it to our particular situation.
There was some interesting art therapy with meaning (not just painting wooden birdhouses or plastic stainglassed "things")
I appreciated the whole program and found it useful. It was pretty much a "last ditch effort" for some of the clients. Others were having difficulty with changes in their lives like divorce.
We each got to see a psychiatrist for one session to see if meds. could help. We had 3 private sessions, one on one with a therapist. The rest of the time we were in a small group of about 4 people. There were lots of material to take home and digest and have as resources for later.
After going through this program, you were entitled to attend "after care" sessions that meet once a week, for free from then on.They are run by therapists and there can be anywhere from 2 to 10 people who happen to drop in for the evening that lasts 2 hours. I attend those a few times a month and have developed lasting friendships with some of the members. Some have mental illnesses, some are struggling with boundary issues or relationship problems.
A few of us meet after the session to have coffee and visit.
The aftercare is an extention of the day treatment and similar materials are presented as well as personal "check ins" .
This was through a national organization called New Life. They do not take insurance.
I have looked into others such as a DBT group. (Dilectal Behavior Therapy?)founded by Marsha Linehan which seemed great also and it has a 6 month, weekly program that is an option if daily is too much or one is working and can't take time off work. It is in the evenings. They also had a 2 week intensive day treatment program. It was run through a hospital and insurance covered it.

Sienna, I see that now you have gotten some responses. Perhaps some people know this as "day treatment" rather than "intensive outpatient".

I have not had day treatment, but it was discussed as a possibility if I needed more structure than what my therapist could offer, when I was going through a very bad episode a few years ago.

I also have a friend and one relative who have been to day treatment after hospital, and found it helpful. I think it was a combo of therapy and education and intensive support, to help build skills and plan how to have ongoing support and positive living for future.

hi noa

thanks for writing. i went to the orientation today and there was only me and another girl.
I think it will be helpful even though i am nervous and paranoid. It is more structure and that is good. kind of like the daytime part of the hospital when i was there. except its the same kind of group every day no art therapists or recreation type stuff. which is fine by me.

anyway, i ll let people knwo what my experience with it is, i start tomrorrorw.

Hi sienna,
Yep, I did an intensive outpatient therapy program for about a year. It was awesome. We had groups, intense groups with some great, and not so great therapists. We saw a doctor, and had lunch. But the most important thing is that whatever you need help with, ask, ask the group facilitator-if that is the case. Talk, Talk, and feel, don't be ashamed or embarassed-you will be pleasantly surprised how well an out patient intensive therapy trial turns out!
It helped me a lot anyway.

That's what made it work! A year is a long time, but I got so much out of it. I was in and out of the hospital for about 31 times from Nov 1999 through June 2001. ECT, etc. SI, attempts, depression, med changes. It was the most difficult period in my life at that time.

Get the most out if it, good for you!
Let me know how it works for you K?

Hi Sienna,

I've been going to a day treatment program for about 1 1/2 yrs now. I like it. What do you think of yours now that you've been there for a couple of weeks?
