I did a 10 day program and it was wonderful. It consisted of several therapists coming in one at a time and teaching behavioral skills and how to look at situations differently. There were worksheets we could fill in to reinforce what was being taught. We all got to comment on each concept and how we could apply it to our particular situation.
There was some interesting art therapy with meaning (not just painting wooden birdhouses or plastic stainglassed "things")
I appreciated the whole program and found it useful. It was pretty much a "last ditch effort" for some of the clients. Others were having difficulty with changes in their lives like divorce.
We each got to see a psychiatrist for one session to see if meds. could help. We had 3 private sessions, one on one with a therapist. The rest of the time we were in a small group of about 4 people. There were lots of material to take home and digest and have as resources for later.
After going through this program, you were entitled to attend "after care" sessions that meet once a week, for free from then on.They are run by therapists and there can be anywhere from 2 to 10 people who happen to drop in for the evening that lasts 2 hours. I attend those a few times a month and have developed lasting friendships with some of the members. Some have mental illnesses, some are struggling with boundary issues or relationship problems.
A few of us meet after the session to have coffee and visit.
The aftercare is an extention of the day treatment and similar materials are presented as well as personal "check ins" .
This was through a national organization called New Life. They do not take insurance.
I have looked into others such as a DBT group. (Dilectal Behavior Therapy?)founded by Marsha Linehan which seemed great also and it has a 6 month, weekly program that is an option if daily is too much or one is working and can't take time off work. It is in the evenings. They also had a 2 week intensive day treatment program. It was run through a hospital and insurance covered it.
