Anyone Have Any Tips on Eating Healthy?

Posted by elbee on August 10, 2005, at 22:02:04

I'm mulling over making a healthy change in my diet. I need to lose about 40 pounds, but most of all I would like to be more in control. I have this diet book by Dr. Dean Ornish that I like but I can't quite bring my self to cut out all meat and added fats. Maybe it's too extreme. What works for you or what changes are you thinking about?

One thing to just start off with is eating a healthy breakfast.

I started eating organic, all natural yogurt (no sugar) but it is vanilla flavored.

Anyway, just with eating a bowl of that each morning (which is really good for you- live good bacteria, calcium, protein, etc..), I noticed a weight loss (I'm not really looking for one but it will happen if you eat yogurt).

I also typically put 2 teaspoons of flax seeds in my yogurt- they add in Omega 3's which are really good for you- but I also like the taste. It gives it a "crunch."

If you like cereal, Kashi crunch is loaded with fiber and vitamins- it would be another way to kick start your morning and help aide weight loss.

I use 1 % organic milk.

For juice, I buy 100% PURE cranberry juice. It's very good for your liver (which if your liver is in goood shape, your whole body will benefit).

It's hard to find 100% pure cranberry- don't buy the junk loaded with sugar.

Lunch- multi grain bread with mustard and I usually eat roast beef and add cucumbers to it. I like "crunch."

Dinner just stick with steamed veggies and chicken, or any type of stir fry- just load yourself down with veggies.

I usually do a side of brown rice (but I add a little bit of chicken broth to add flavor).

For snacks- there are a ton of sugar free things you can buy. I really like the sugar free chocolate pudding.

I also eat a lot of watermelon.

Make slow changes. If you drink a lot of pops/soda, just slowly cut them out until it's mostly water, etc..

Of course, exercise!

Let us know how it goes.. Good luck.

Have you looked into the South Beach diet? It seems like it would be easier to follow. Ornish's program is really difficult to stay on. Also, I don't like that he uses simple carbs like white bread and pasta rather than whole grains. I'm sure you'd lose weight on it and lower your cholesterol though.

Yum thanks for the tips

Good idea. I usually skip breakfast, but I'll try not to...

Thanks for the tips. I will definitely try loading up on veggies for dinner. Watermelon and cranberry juice sound good too. I'll let you know how it goes.

No, I haven't looked into South Beach. Maybe it is easier to follow. I have a tough time making myself try the Ornish diet, so maybe it's not the right combo. I'll do some checking into s.beach.

Also, have you ever thought about Weight Watchers Point system? Lots of flexibility on that one. You get to have some sweets once in a while if you want them and it's very effective for weight loss.

If you think Dean Ornish's approach is extreme, then you might not like mine, but I'll tell you a little about it if you're interested. I lost about 60 pounds in the last 2 years eating a raw plant-based diet, meaning I only eat raw, uncooked fruits, vegetables, nuts and seeds. Almost everything I eat comes from the produce department or the bulk bins where I buy seeds and nuts. I rarely buy anything that's packaged. Personally, I love this eating lifestyle. I've never felt better or looked better. My skin looks great, I'm at my ideal weight and people tell me I look 15-20 years younger. It has been a drastic lifestyle change, but I've made the change gradually. If you're interested in learning more, some good books are "Conscious Eating" by Gabriel Cousins or "Eating for Beauty" by David Wolfe. An approach which is not quite as drastic is described in a book by Harvey Diamond called "Fit for Life".

The link I posted for "Fit for Life" takes you to the wrong book, so I'll try it again.

It did it again. When I got the Amazon.com options for the book, I definitely clicked the right one, but it still linked to the wrong book. Oh well, if you want to look up "Fit for Life" on Amazon, you can always do that without the link.

My thing is fruit, vegetables, and good protein.
I've seen very healthy vegetarians, but you have to be a good cook.
Lots of variety and small dishes.
