I work out twice a day...once before work early in the morning, and once at lunchtime. I split it up because there is not enough time to do both cardio and weights.....Is there any advantage/disadvantage to doing cardio in the morning and weights at lunch, or vice versa? or doesnt it matter. Thanks!

I'm just impressed that you work out twice a day. How do you keep up your motivation?

It has been tough. to give you an answer that probably won't satisfy you very much, I have ADD, and I take Adderall to keep my overal organization/motivational factor up. however, over the past few days after trying to switch my routine to before work+lunch, I realized I just won't be able to handle it. I have always hated getting sweaty right after I wake up for some reason. It's not the early hours, its the fact that I'm sweating right after I woke up.
So, I'm going back to lunchtime+after work.
(By the way, the adderall is only 50% of the motivational factor...the rest comes from seeing the results coming out of the shower in my towel, can't help but feel good watching my new self get changed in that huge mirror they've got!

I saw your post and had to read it. I'm really impressed reading about your dedication to working out. The results are really worth every drop of sweat, aren't they? I think you are doing a fine job, I am a fitness instructor and am currently getting my certification in personal training. I will do some research on your question about splitting up the workout and get back to you. One question: Are you trying to gain muscle? lose fat? both? increase endurance and or body build? Sometimes that makes a difference in the order you do your weights and cardio. YOU ARE AWESOME!! Keep it up, because you are adding years to your life, fighting off depression, and making your bones stronger.-L

Hey, just got back from the gym actually! Still on 2 times a day....7 days a week. It has become an addiction. Like today it was cold and rainy out, you'd expect the motivation level to go down, but it actually went up....when it's so nasty out, I look forward to getting in there. I have a routine...for my cardio session, I just work on the eliptical until it says I've burned 600 calories...then on my way to the lockerroom, I usually shoot some hoops and do a hard lap around the gym till I'm about to fall over then head into the showers. For weights, I shoot hoops for a while (maybe 10, 20 minutes)...but not just shooting, I sometimes run full court back and forth doing layups, get myself into a good sweat, then go up and lift for about 45 minutes on various machines. It really does feel great. Tomorow I have scheduled a free nutrition appointment at the gym, so I'm going to show up there around 10:30, do a workout and meet with her. REally, results keep ya coming back. It's the first few weeks you've got to push through.

I haven't been on this board to read your reply, and I'm sorry. I hope the nutritionist helped you out, and I'm sure she gave you some advice on your weight training and cardio workouts. It's sounds like you have a great support system there, so go for it. Are you trying to loseweight or gain muscle? If you are trying to gain muscle and get bigger that way, it's possible to do to MUCH cardio even though you want to lost fat. You may ask at the gym about that. Good luck, keep me posted because I'm interested in your progress. It works like a charm. -L

a little late response- but incase you check again. i believe it to be very beneficial to work out twice a day and the answer is simple. i have a workout routine much like your own and am a certified personal trainer as well (although now im just using my knowledge to help family & friends.) the reason it is beneficial is you are raising your metablism twice. you raise your metablism when you work out and it stays increased for several hours following working out. so you enjoy the heightened metabolism and extra calorie burning effect twice in one day as compared to the average person who experiences it once a day or more average-never a day. what was posted before about possibly too much cardio is correct. that all depends on your body and what you are trying to achieve. congrats-so many people want your type of motivation.
