Yeah, money is symbolic but money is money too! Therapy is like any other service--you should know what the pricing situation is! If your dentist was charging you $250 for a check-up and all your friends' dentists were half that wouldn't you wonder? This is no different! It could be he's got a sliding scale and maybe you're at the top? I think it's totally right-on to ask and find out how the pricing works. Initially when I went to my therapist it was a scale and then when I came back a few years later it was just one fee which I did for a year. Then I basically said I wouldn't come anymore at that price--and she lowered it by $25/session. I was absolutely going to walk away if I didn't get the price I needed--I simply couldn't afford to do it at the higher rate.
