Within the next few months, I'm going to have all my amalgam fillings removed and replaced by composite fillings. I have asked the dentist to use a rubber dam to prevent any leakage of mercury into my mouth. He has agreed. He's a very good dentist with an excellent reputation.
The dam is an essential part of protecting your safety, but does your dentist have experience in doing amalgam removals? Any dentist has the competency to drill out an old filling, but amalgam removal should really be thought of as a specialization. There are techniques which minimize the risk to both patient and dentist. You really are best off having a dentist who does a lot of these procedures.

I've looked into it (a lot), and I plan to do it (I'm absolutely convinced that having mercury in my mouth is not a good idea (I'm an environmental toxicologist)), but I'm not in a financial position to proceed (currently surviving on a small disability pension).
I'm going to comment in each message on this thread.
