what you express does not sound like hypnogogic/hypnopompic illusions to me. i suffered from them prpbably since i was 12.
one thing with these is a state of paralysis. and Extreme fear. you said a friend thought she was being grabbed and pulled out of the room... that experience sounds more like a hallucination, not due to sleep issues but due to chemical changes. i'd guess going on or off AP typically does this.
i too have experienced things like you mentioned with various meds. it normally lasts about week -2weeks.if this Does happen during a state of sleep and when you wake you know...it was hypnog episode then it was likely that.
if you are still convinced that it 'happened'. that is more likely an hallucination not related to sleep.sometimes my hypnogogics were so bad i would wake up disoriented and wasn't sure if they were real or not, so i'd sleep with the light on. but the next day i knew what they were.
also, mine would also tend to occur in clusters. after the first one i would be Terrified to try to sleep again because, even knowing it wasn't real, the fear was.i cant tell you any real thing that stopped these. i can tell you they got much worse when i was in therapy doing trauma work. so i know my PTSD did exacerbate them.
