There are many problems with long-term benzo use besides their habit forming/addictive potential Fred. Tolerance is the main, with agoraphobia, monophobia, depression and OCD being the other major drawbacks. British doctors do use benzos, but tend to limit their prescriptions to courses of 2-4 weeks to avoid these problems, sometimes prescribing repeat short courses for many years if necessary. That's not bigotry, it's common sense - a most English virtue.
