The author Terrence McKenna has a whole lot to say on this topic. I think he claimed that the spores of magic mushrooms came from outer space, and the visions are messages from aliens. Sounds wacky, but I understand the need to explain the incredible visions with incredible theories.
Maybe there's just some "snakes and panther visions" area of the brain that gets stimulated.
