That's a very intersting idea. You've gotta suspect that such an extreme state as unconsciousness must have an extreme effect. One wonders where the consciousness goes and what it experiences during these times, comas, anesthesias and the like. Some shamanistic teachings say that there is a splitting off during times of emotional trauma. The soul says in effect 'I'm outta here. This is more than I bargained for." And splits off - not all of it of course, just a part of it. The soul gets confused, lost in inter-dimensional terrain and can't - or doesn't want to - find it's way back. A process called 'soul retrieval' was performed by 'witch doctors' and now by modern day shamanistic healers. It's more a recognition and ritual shared by another person versed in esoteric psychology who is willing to undergo a frightening journey for you.
Undergoing anethesia is probably another way the soul gets confused. It's an unnatural state of a necessary imposed non-consiousness that's very intense. Great pain is undergone, but there's no way for the body and soul to acknowledge and reconcile it, so again, the sould goes 'bye-bye'. I wonder if any studies have been done on this subject? Would make a great doctoral dissertation.
