Mornings are the worst

Posted by jammerlich on August 15, 2007, at 9:49:08

That's what I'm noticing. I feel a lot better later in the day. Waking up is such a disappointment; tears come shortly thereafter. The sadness is overwhelming and I don't know what to do to make it better. Any suggestions?

A change in your morning routine, maybe? If you usually make coffee then sit and read the paper etc. then do something different. Say, start the day with a trip out to a cafe for your morning brew. Skip the newspaper altogether. Bring an inspiring book, or a journal to write some notes in. Take yourself out of yourself.

Just changing my routine is enough to take my mind out of its rut sometimes. Think of how refreshing a vacation can be - because you're doing something out of the ordinary.

Turn on the radio and find morning DJs you really like. I find that people talking really helps - too many sad songs don't work. Or choose talk radio.

The other thing I have to do is GET UP. If I lay there, all is lost. I get overwhelmed.

My final thought - it really is OK to cry a little. You are going through a hard time. For a very long time I would wake up and pray, "Please God, don't let anything bad happen today."

Thanks for the suggestions. I will put some of them to the test tomorrow. My goal will be to get up as soon as I wake and shower and put on some make-up. I hardly ever wear it anymore, but maybe I'd feel better if I did? It's something to do, at least.

At the moment, I'm trying to work on my resume. There's not much to put on it, so the actual work is in trying to make it seem less lame than it really is. I always thought it was so great that I didn't have to work. But now it sucks. I'm in my 30's, with a degree, and never a real job, to speak of. Even I would have doubts about hiring me!

Hey!

Yes, getting up and putting on make-up and just generally sprucing yourself up sounds like a good idea. I also find I tend to ruminate when I'm lying in bed in the mornings......I'm always amazed at how much better I feel when I have to actually wake up early for something, and then there's no time to ruminate. Wear your favorite nice clothes too. Even if you're not going anywhere or doing anything.

Let us know how it goes!

If you have any volunteer work that looks good too. And about any previous work - don't minimize anything you did because it all counts and contributes to your abilities today. Whenever I have been a position to hire, I was always interested more in a person's attitude and how positively (or not) they could talk about their previous work and bosses than the specific work itself.

Education and creativity matter a whole lot as well.

Hang in there and try not to be hard on yourself.

jammer, maybe you can lay out your clothes the night before, when you're feeling okay. That way when you wake up and feel like you're in some kind of apathetic hell-hole (that's what *I* feel like, anyways) you can at least glance over to that outfit you picked out, and pull it over your head.

The sooner your morning chores are out of the way, the sooner the rest of the day can start.

I find that making a little list of goals first thing in the morning helps shake off the apathy.

my lists lately look like this

1) brush teeth
2) eat breakfast
3) wash face
4) feed cat
5) litter box
6) one item of business

and that's it. after that, I don't care what happens with the rest of the day, 'cause I already got the hard stuff over with.

Hop in the car and go buy a newspaper at a coffeeshop. pretend to read it while you people watch, and admire mommies who try to bring 3 toddlers to the coffeeshop. venti soy latte extra hot extra foamy 2shots of vanilla. etc.

((((((jammer))))))

ever try waking up on the other side of the bed?

I think it's good to work on your resume, as long as it doesn't turn into a "I'm pathetic" kind of deal. You know? Because you're not pathetic and thinking you are is just going to make everything harder.

The other thing that I wonder about is whether you could go for a walk (or swimming or whatever kind of exercise you might enjoy) first thing in the morning. It's not for everything, but it might help get all that "negative energy" from the a.m. out.

Nice clothes? Sadly, I think that might be asking a little much of myself at the moment. Getting out of my pj's would be a big deal. That's what I'm aiming for today. I have lunch plans, so it'll happen. And I've even showered and put on (a little) makeup.

Thanks for the pep talk about getting myself hired. I hope I find similar attitudes around here. I applied for one job yesterday, so we'll see how that goes.

Have a good day!

Llurpsie, thanks for the practical suggestions. I think putting out something to wear the night before is a really good idea. Anything I could do when I'm feeling decent to help myself when I'm not would be great. And I really appreciate that you shared your list. It helps to know that someone else struggles with the basic stuff and that it's OK if that's most of what I do in a day....and give myself a break after that.

I might try getting up on the other side of the bed, too. Didn't want to risk it this morning though. I feel hung over (sad, considering I haven't had a drop of alcohol in weeks)and it's a tight squeeze over there. I wouldn't want to kick the foot of the bed and hurt my toe, or anything. Even something that minor could send me right back to bed....only after checking to see that all toes were still pointing the right direction, of course.

I'm showered and have a little makeup on today. I can't remember the last time I wore makeup. Don't give me too much credit, though. I have lunch plans, so the shower was bound to happen. I'm not sure I'd have done much otherwise, with the hangover and all.

Sadly, I think a walk is out of the question right now. It is so hot here, I hate to even run errands b/c the walk from the car to the store is sweltering. And then the car is hot once you get back. It's something I'd like to start doing when the weather cools, though.

While my resume is pathetic, I don't really think *I* am, if that makes any sense. I'm confident I can make a good impression IF I can get an interview. It's getting the interview that's hard when the resume looks like mine. I sent one in yesterday, so keep your fingers crossed for me. It's at the bank where I do business and they're always so friendly and helpful when I go in. I think it'd be a great work atmosphere. Plus it's less than 2 miles from my house, which would be so convenient.

I'm sorry morning are so awful, jammer. Is there anything you really like that you can have on your bed? or a painting you really like to put on the wall?

I always listen to NPR on the radio-- that kind of gets my mind off a lot of internal things. Of course I usually hear some political horror that gets me all up in arms-- but at least I'm not thinking about my immediate problems.

I"ve definitely got my fingers crossed about your job application. By the way, I'll be around this pm, if you get back from wherever you're going and want to chat.

Hey Jammer, hope your lunch with friend was good.

It's nice to have this kind of thing set up, because then you know that you'll have at least one thing to do all day long. Even if it feels like a chore.

Maybe you're like me and you feel guilty that meeting up with a friend feels like a chore? I hate that feeling. Usually, though- once I drag myself there, I find that the conversation and activities (lunch yum!) help get me out of my depressive rumination.

******
This morning I didn't feel like getting out of bed either. I think I had a klonopin hangover. I've been trying to wean myself off of it, since I've been feeling better, but last night I took a whole .5mg tablet, and I swear I didn't really feel 'alive' until noon. too bad, because h and i went to an amusement park. imagine being wiped out and exhausted zombie at amusement park. yuck!

makeup is good. I always try to put on concealer and mascara before seeing T. Also before h and i go to a movie or out to dinner. otherwise my blemishes and fine eyelashes are exposed to the world.

take care, and I hope that every morning gets a little easier. You're not alone-

Good for you, Jammer! I hope you hear something from the bank soon.

I know what you mean about exercising in the heat. It's hard for me, too. Maybe in the fall?

Hope your weekend goes well.

How goes it Jammer? (nm)
