CBT can work to help a person develop better sleep hygiene, to teach relaxation and thought stopping skills, to develop a sleep schedule for coping with circadian rhythym (sp?) shifts and to address maladaptive cognitions related to sleep.
Like all therapies, it doesn't work for all folks all the time. But it can help.

I guess the condition is very related to whether CBT will be of any use. On Remedyfind.com, CBT isn't in the Top 10- most effective treatments for depression-in fact, no non-chemical approach appears in the Top 10. So on a purely rational basis, it might be best to save for CBT for at least #11 on your list of things that might help, if you suffer from depression. In panic, CBT comes in as number 4-unfortunately, that would include people that suffer from isolated periods of panic which are usually sitational and those with panic disorder, in which the panic periods don't seem to show any pattern and the panic is accompanied by depression. My guess is that CBT might be very effective for the former and of questionable value (at least, that was my experience) for the latter. I'm not sure how much use CBT is to a person who is constantly intensely distressed by depression/anxiety or bipolar disorder. I found CBT to be useful after I became much better in my constant engagement with panic disorder. My guess is that the more biochemically-based a mental illness is and the more intense the symptoms are, the less value CBT would be expected to have. The therapist has to have someone "home" to talk to.
But really the point is that there sometimes that even attempting CBT probably isn't worth the time or effort-and in making that decision, it does not render the person morally irresponsible.

I still find that simple behavioral tricks work well for my run-of-the-mill insomnia. Reading an old textbook often puts me right out. So does counting backwards from 500.

As an aside, I've been using CBT techniques to help cope with depression since 1982. It doesn't reduce the depression per se, but it does mitigate the damage the depression produces and helps to preserve self-esteem.Depression is a liar. I've learned to recognize the lies and replace them cognitively with positive thoughts through reality testing.

seroquel knocks me out for hours, it was way to strong for me. I found that CBT works really well for sleep but you have to keep it up so you have to keep paying. I could have bought 5 years worth of sleeping pills from 7 weeks of CBT but I have to admit that it really did help, not so good now that I have stopped. I don't have insurance. If you don't want to take pills for sleep and can afford CBT then go for it but if you can't afford it then jump back on the med-go-round. Good luck people!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I generally use a meditation (?) variant. It may be some other variant, not sure.
It's probably also related to my pain blocking techniques.
The only problem is that it requires a certain amount of concentration, and I can't always muster that.
But when I can I can put myself out in less than fifteen minutes.
What is that called? Guided relaxation, imagery? I concentrate on "smoothing out" the portions of the brain that feel active. On blanking out the activity of the brain. For pain blocking I picture a wall that the nerve impulses bump against and are repulsed before reaching my brain. It doesn't work well for headaches.
Or maybe it's just called the placebo effect. But for whatever reason, it works well.

Works for hiccups too, as my husband discovered to his annoyance, because he didn't believe it would work.
But hiccups require a whole heck of a lot of concentration.
