im only 21 years old and i am obese!! please help!

hi,
ok here it goes...i am only 21 years old 5'6 and i weigh 227 pounds! and on top of it i am a female!!! within the past year i have gained 70 pounds! please this is getting out of control! my ankles hurt my knees hurt...i have NO motivation! i am slowly getting depressed and i am starting to not be able to function normally.

i go to college and work full-time, i live on my own, and it is soooo very hard for me to motivate ME! i know that a good diet and exercise is where i should start, but when i have no "extra" money to buy good organic foods, or when i have no money to buy a workout machine it is hard. plus i tried just walking outside, or even run because i can do that a little.....i am afraid! i live in a BAD neighborhood and i fear for my safety outside all the time! i fell like i am a prisoner!!!
please anything is better than nothing! support, ideas, anything would be comforting and welcomed!

You can do this! If you are a college student I bet you are walking a lot. Throw in some extra stairs when you can between classes.

Watch what you DRINK that can really add calories. You don't have to have organic food to lose weight. Chose fruits and veggies. Eat something like oatmeal or a whole grain cereal with skim milk for breakfast. Get a frozen Lean Cuisine or Weight Watcher meal for lunch and add an apple or carrot sticks. That should cost no more than $3 and you can't eat out for that.

Good snacks are low fat popcorn, handful of plain almonds, or a low fat cheese stick (1 oz).

thanks! i really did not think i would hear back so soon from someone! there is hope...i am going to try to eat better!! as for a better "workout plan"...i can only hope that i can become less tired and motivated to take extra steps, or maybe a class at my college....i have been thinking. but i need some ideas maybe of workouts that mught keep my interest! that i have learned is my BIGGEST challenge!! i like to do many things and give everything a chance, but keeping my interested long enough to even see results is hard! because i am away at college, my goal is to loose the weight before i go home for christmas break! it would be so amazing to see my parents faces! ever since the deaths in the family, it would (i am hopeing) to give my family some incentive to start caring again about their health!! thanks MB!! it was very nice to hear from you!

i am 23 and 203 pounds (and i'm only 5'3). I recently lost 8 pounds though (took a couple of months, but i did it). My advice is of course to eat better and exercise. If you don't like walking in your neighborhood, try an indoor mall or something maybe.

Also, if you can, see a dietician for weight loss help. They can tell you how to eat to be more healthy and lose weight. Even if you choose not to see a specialist, don't eat less than 1200 calories a day (your body needs 1200 cals to keep going). I am on a 1400 cal diet.

Don't push yourself to lose the weight too fast. According to my doc, my ideal weight loss rate is 3-4 pounds a month. I've been losing about that much. He says this weight loss weight is ideal because it makes for a more permanant loss. So maybe this time next year i will have lost about 48 pounds. My goal is 130, so i need to lose 63 pounds.

You can do it if you try! You're not alone.

Just make a point of only eating real food and watch the carbs (high GI ones) and the bad fats.

thanks to everyone! i am starting to workout to billy blanks...2 days, but not too bad for me. although i do have the flu!!! between the barfing and trying to eat crackers and soup, i am still somewhat motivated to getting healthy. ....i have thought about going to a doctor, but i just havent because im trying to get to know the area here more. but i hear that the hospital not too far from me is pretty good. ive always been worried that they would tell me make sure you eat breakfast and so much of this and that...but honestly thats going to be hard to incorporate in my crazy college lifestyle!

You really DO need to eat breakfast. But it doesn't have to be something difficult to do. Have a cheese stick and piece of fruit for breakfast if you have to eat on the run. Do you live in a dorm? Are you on the college meal plan? There are a lot of things you can eat that are fast to fix or take out that aren't too bad for you.

no i do not live at school. i live in an apartment. when i buy food however, i know that i should be buying better foods, it is just learning some alternatives. the string cheese is a good idea...thanks!
