coke nose, brain damage...?

Posted by AMD on May 24, 2005, at 20:34:33

Folks,

Ever since using cocaine recently, my sinuses have been extra /clear/. I can breathe freely through both nostrils, although there is a very, very slight amount of blood on a tissue if I push it up my right nostril.

Of course, my being paranoid:

+ Does this indicate I may have a perforated septum or other nasal problem?

+ When I blow my nose, is it possible I am literally blowing out /chunks/ of my nose? Or my brain?

+ Likewise, when I inhale, do I have a hole to my brain? Am I being ludicrous?

I have this horrible image in my mind that every time I blow my nose I'm blowing out pieces of nose tissue and, more freaky, pieces of my brain!

On another note, I've gone a week without alcohol or drugs, and I'm trying extra hard this time to keep it that way.

Impossible. You're obsessing.

The first drink. All else stems from that. Controlling this is about controlling the first drink.

You've got to figure out how to have red flags go up and warning buzzers go off if you even think that one drink is no big deal.

That first drink is everything. There is no other factor to consider.

I can't answer your questions about what it's doing to your nose/sinus's/brain but as a child who had a father who was addicted to cocaine, I BEG You to stay away from that stuff.

It ruined my father, my mother, and my life. We lost everything we had because of his addiction to that stuff.

It's not worth losing your life or soul over.

Larry,

My nose has felt stuffed up, swollen, "popping" this whole week. Is this from the cocaine? Is my playing with it contributing to the problem? Is there any chance my nose would collapse (or change figure in /any/ way) following the cocaine use? I'm a bit paranoid here, mainly because my nose swollen, bloated.

Still no alcohol. :-)

Cocaine constricts blood vessels. The septal perforations and the like are caused by progressive erosion of tissue due to loss of blood flow. Tiny little ischemic areas, gradually causing the tissues to shrink. There can be a little rebound inflammation after coke.

Your nose won't collapse.

You could be stuffed up from poking around in there. You could be stuffed up from pollen in the air. You could be stuffed up from all that poking exposing the tissue to a virus on your hand.

It's great that you still haven't had a drink.

All you have to remember is that what was good for you yesterday will be good for you today. Not having a drink yesterday was good for you. If an opportunity to drink comes up, make that same good decision you already did the day before. Think about how much agony and anxiety you cause yourself with each excursion out there. Play the tape to the end: waking up naked, in trouble with your room-mate, money blown, no idea how certain things happened. That's what one drink causes. Your meds all over the floor, in the wrong bottles, many missing. That's what one drink causes. Strange men you don't trust in your private spaces. That's what one drink causes.

You're going to be fine. You will still need to manage your obsessions.....have you tried the nutrients I suggested?

For what it's worth

I have Terrible Nose Yucks this time of year: it feels as though I have to blow my nose frequently, but no amount of blowing helps; my nose feels clogged; etc. I finally had to end my years of denial: I have Allergies.

I've found a lot of relief from two things: saline nasal spray, AND LEAVING MY NOSE ALONE! The saline spray helps moisturize the nasal passages -- used, at most, once a day -- and leaving it along keeps me from aggravating the problems.

There's no question, it's easy to get kinda obsessive about this sort of thing, AMD, because your nose is -- well, it's in the middle of your face and you breathe through it. But the two best things you can do about it all are follow Larry's advice about That First Drink, and learn to keep your hands away from your nose.

Hope that helps.

Larry,

Thanks. My nose is stuffed, perhaps from my latest coke binge, but as long as it's not going to collapse and/or look different to other folks, I won't obsess. Or I'll try not to.

I have tried meditating when I feel a surge of panic coming on, and it has helped. But I am obviously still obsessing over certain things. I get a picture in my mind -- my nostrils becoming uneven, my eyes going crooked, my teeth shifting -- and it becomes a complete obsession. Are any of these things even remotely possible?

The stuffiness I have is at the top of my nose, and it's annoying. Irritation from cocaine? It's been about a week and a half -- will this take more time to recover? Plus, I'm constantly stiffing from the irritation -- I hope this, too, will pass, before I start driving myself crazy.

No drinking last night. I feel more in focus now. Concentrating on how I'll feel tomorrow, not tonight.
