OK...this sounds insane...but for all/any of us either trying to lose weight, or just get in better health, here is an idea.
For the rest of the month of June, our goal will be to simply walk, outside, 20 mins a day. This can also include other activities, like swimming 20 mins a day, or riding a bike 20 mins a day. This is for many of us who can't be pulled from the bed or couch. Whatcha say folks? Hello?..yes?
Please report your activity if you can.OK...sign on up! (Next month may/will be different, but let's worry about today!)
Best,
Jay

Hi Jay,
Sounds like a healthy idea. I am currently using Leslie Sansone walking tapes to help me stay motivated. She uses other movements while you are walking. Perhaps, I am spoiled. I am liking walking in air conditioned room with 2 persians watching. LOL

Hi Jay,
I'm in. It'll be fun to compare notes about where we walked or what form of exercise we did. I love taking walks. I have some physical limitations with exercising. I have joint problems, fibromyalgia and foot pain, but I can take walks if they are not too long. 20 minutes is okay. Rebounding is the other exercise I do, and sometimes I do a little yoga. I'm going to try to get my husband to take a walk with me tonight. Thanks for the inspiration. I look forward to hearing from you and others.

My husband and I went on our walk this evening. We went at dusk, and the air was very fresh and cool. I haven't been feeling well today, and I actually had to take a couple of vicodin for pain. I was still feeling sort of drowsy and slow from the medication, and the walk really helped to clear my head and make me more alert.

Can I sign up as a junior member? I made a goal to park farther away than usual, forcing me to walk more to get where I am going, but I'm not ready to commit to 20 minutes.
Next step will be 20 minutes of walking. But I'll also report my yoga.

I skipped my walk yesterday, and I didn't do any other exercise. Tonight I'm going to take my dog out. It's a lovely clear day. The weather is perfect. I bought my dog a pretty new harness and leash, so she'll be out in her "Sunday best." I think I need to walk off all the food I've been eating. Mostly it's been very healthy food, but I've had a huge appetite, so I'm eating a lot! How's everyone else doing?

Today my husband and I took the dog out for a walk at a marina close by. It was darkly overcast, but the water was still beautiful, and we saw some heron on the rocks. My dog loves to chase the squirels too. She never catches them, and I'm glad. I like to have her socialize with the other dogs down there. We ate our salads for lunch too.
So how are everyone else's walks going? What about you, Jay?
No one else has posted about their walks. I hope we can keep this thread going. Especially since it's not just talk, it's action!

And I'll report everytime I make it to my 3rd floor apartment on crutches and the exact weight of the groceries I am balancing on my head at the time!
Hi GG you gorgeous girl :-)

The last four days I have increased my walking because the parking garage at the hospital is waaaayyy far away from the ortho unit where my mom was. Does that count? And I did yoga twice in four days.

Hey folks:
I am really happy to see so many participate in something that is as simple, and can be as wonderful as a brief walk. I have tried for "every day", but a new job (which I quit today..thankfully..) stressed me out and tired me out so much, I really had little time.
So, I am still at it, trying to keep my goal, but yes I have missed a few days in between. But don't be disheartened, because there is always time for change. The reason I brought this idea up is in line with my thinking of doing "baby steps". And, the idea is to find a bit of enjoyment and mix in a tad of healthiness, not to become Athlete of the Year..heh ;-)
So, on my little walks, or 'journeys', I bring along a portable cd player, put on some music I enjoy. Some days if I am really in a bad mood, the negative energy gets released by a bit of exercise. A good mood can also be lifted further.
Yes, sometimes it *really* hurts just to do that 20 minutes of exercise too, so I try to be gentle with/to myself. Most of all..be *good* to yourself...because you deserve it!
Best to all..
Jay

I've been reading the posts and have been walking now for 2 days in a row. That's not much, but it does motivate me to get outdoors.
Today I added some situps.

I just found out about this "club" but I must have sensed it psychically (ooooo), because on June 11, after having a terrible night with anxiety, I started walking on my treadmill. (It is summertime in Phoenix and much too hot for me to walk any time of day OUTside.)
Here's a tip: If you're walking on a treadmill and having trouble staying with it, try moving your treadmill.
I've had mine for 2-3 years but could never log more than 15-20 minutes and couldn't seem to stay with it for more than a few months, and then only every-other day or so. During this time, I had the treadmill set up parallel to a wall in my living room, so the view straight ahead of me was 10 feet of floor and my stereo cabinet. There was a window to my right, but I had to turn my head to see out it. I'VE SWITCHED THE TREADMILL so it's perpendicular to the wall and facing straight out a window. When I walk now, I face out across my backyard and it is almost -- dare I say it? -- pleasant. I find I can focus and enjoy my walk for 30-40 minutes. I spend the first 1-2 minutes strolling, then set the pace to a brisk walk (3 MPH), then drop it back down the last 1-2 minutes. My mood is definitely improved and I am sleeping much better at night.
More specifics: I walk Monday through Friday and give myself the weekends off. I walk in the morning or early afternoon -- not too late in the day. I keep a little spiral notebook and pencil on my treadmill so I can record my walks. Sometimes I even make little notes about how I feel physically or mentally.
Keep at it, everybody. If it's not working, change your routine or environment!

I'm still in. I'll have been at it -- 5 days a week, 20-40 min per day -- 4 weeks come this Thursday. I really DO feel better and sleep better.
This is the end of the thread.
