I just found out about this "club" but I must have sensed it psychically (ooooo), because on June 11, after having a terrible night with anxiety, I started walking on my treadmill. (It is summertime in Phoenix and much too hot for me to walk any time of day OUTside.)
Here's a tip: If you're walking on a treadmill and having trouble staying with it, try moving your treadmill.
I've had mine for 2-3 years but could never log more than 15-20 minutes and couldn't seem to stay with it for more than a few months, and then only every-other day or so. During this time, I had the treadmill set up parallel to a wall in my living room, so the view straight ahead of me was 10 feet of floor and my stereo cabinet. There was a window to my right, but I had to turn my head to see out it. I'VE SWITCHED THE TREADMILL so it's perpendicular to the wall and facing straight out a window. When I walk now, I face out across my backyard and it is almost -- dare I say it? -- pleasant. I find I can focus and enjoy my walk for 30-40 minutes. I spend the first 1-2 minutes strolling, then set the pace to a brisk walk (3 MPH), then drop it back down the last 1-2 minutes. My mood is definitely improved and I am sleeping much better at night.
More specifics: I walk Monday through Friday and give myself the weekends off. I walk in the morning or early afternoon -- not too late in the day. I keep a little spiral notebook and pencil on my treadmill so I can record my walks. Sometimes I even make little notes about how I feel physically or mentally.
Keep at it, everybody. If it's not working, change your routine or environment!
