I'm wondering how many of you feel that nutrition plays a major role in mental health. If so, have you changed your diet, and has it helped?
I've been drinking wheatgrass juice for about 9 months almost daily. It has all the known vitamins and many minerals. It's also very detoxifying to the body. I also eat raw organic fruits and vegetables, seeds and nuts as the primary staples of my diet. I only eat dairy products occassionally when I eat out as well as fish. I don't eat any fowl or red meat. I also don't eat any refined sugar or iodized salt.
I've lost about 35 pounds, and my skin has never been better. I've had a couple of medical problems vanish, and I rarely get colds or flues. I have much fewer problems with depression although I still have it occassionally.
I don't take vitamins or other supplements because I've heard that they are not very absorbable by the body, and I can get plenty of nutrition from the whole, unprocessed foods that I consume, especially wheatgrass juice.
What's your diet like? Care to share?

no caffeine
no sugar
more vegetables
more fruitsand because my medication is making me parched,

Hi partly cloudy,
I can understand the others, but why did you cut out fruits and vegetables?

I admire your dedication to healthy eating! Your eating style reminds me of something I read about how depression may be induced by modern-day eating habits. (I'll post the link if I can find it.) Refined sugar seems to be the root cause of many health issues (including complexion) so you're way ahead of the rest of us by cutting it out.
My diet consists on anything I can get my hands on. LOL. Seriously, I'm not a big fan or red meat or chicken but I'll eat it if I have to.
By the way, what does wheatgrass juice taste like?

I added more fruit and veggies to my diet, and cut out caffeine and sugar.

Wildflower,
Wheatgrass juice tastes just like you'd expect; It tastes like grass. The freshest wheatgrass juice is slightly sweet. I certainly don't drink wheatgrass juice for the taste, but it's not hard to tolerate 2 oz at a time. I drink it because of the nutritional benefits and for the detoxification. I took medications for a long, long time, and I'm sure it took its toll on my body. I used to take antidepressants and anti-anxiety drugs. I took them for about 18 years. I don't take them at all any more. My health has improved greatly in every respect. I still have some major medical problems, but the symptoms are much better, and like I said, I'm not "cured" of depression or anxiety, but I feel A LOT better. No need for meds.

Wow Cass, you eat so well. I'm terrible. Have a lot of food issues.
What kind of things do you cook up for dinner or have for lunch? I'd like to know more!

Well, I eat a lot of cereal. I like cherios. I eat yogurt a lot too. Lately, I noticed that I gained 5 pounds over night. I don't know if it's my exercising or my meds for depression. People tell me I look so healthy, because I am bigger. Oh, I hate this. I know that I am building muscle, but I am almost embarassed about my legs and rear. They have really gotten firm and bigger. I am a short person, so I feel it's making me look even shorter. I am trying to get fit, but darn....

I posted this above but I accidentally directed it to myself.
Hi Rach,
I prepare food, but I rarely "cook" food because most of what I eat is raw. A good day for me might be as follows:
First thing in the morning: 2 oz. wheatgrass juice.
Breakfast: 3 grapefruit or a large serving of watermelon or any other selection of fruit.
Lunch: A very large salad with dark, leafy greens, sprouts (I do my own sprouting), avocado and an assortment of others cut veggies with a simple homemade dressing on it.
Snack: Coconut meat or some fruit like mango or papaya or "green juice" which is freshly juiced cucumbers, cabbage, celery, zuchini and sprouts.
Dinner: raw sauerkraut (a natural probiotic which is excellent for digestion and it is high in B vitamins), and a raw "soup" which I prepare in a high powered blender. I often make something very similar to gaspacho.
Evening: 2 more oz. of wheatgrass juice.
Oh...and I also drink lots of water. I try to drink half my weight in ounces.
Some days aren't quite this good, especially if I eat out. The more I eat this way, the better I feel. My digestion is excellent, and like I mentioned before, some medical problems I had have vanished like acid reflux and candida, and the weight loss is very good for my ego. I just feel better overall.

I am trying to eat healtiier but I seem to have cravings for foods...like sugar. I know this is an indicator oof candida and I need to cut it out. I just can't seem to find something that can give me the guidance that I need to change my eating habits. I seem to break down and eat junk still...chocolate and sometimes even chips and I know that these things are terrible for me. I don't eat at fast fod restaurants and try not to eat that many processed foods.
I definitely believe that mood can be somewhatg controlled by what we eat. I have actually heard that there are specific foods that certain people can digest more easily than others. I often notice that my mood will change after I've eaten, even if I've eaten properly sometimes. It is an interesting question.
There is a homeopathic dr here in this state that does a total body overhaul and tells her patients what they should eat more of and what to stay away from based on their body. I really want to go and try this out as I truly believe that we consume based a lot on emotion and end up eating foods that perpetuate our mood or even worsen it at times. I would be interested in hearing about anything more you find out.

Hi Beatrix,
Refined sugar is really addicting. It took a long time for me to overcome my cravings, but I did get over them. Sometimes, if I eat out, and there's a litte refined sugar in something, I'll start craving it again. I wouldn't doubt that someday it'll be labeled as a drug. The vegan raw foodist lifestyle is very natural for me. It coincides with my ethical values and it's helping my health and weight although I'm neither
100% vegan nor 100% raw foodist.
Digestive issues are of utmost importance. The better you digest your food, the more energy you have and the more nutritents you absorb. Some good ways I help my digestion are to eat when happy and/or bless the food before eating. I chew until the food until it is liquified, and I adhere to the rules of food combining. Probiotics foods are also very helpful to me. I learned most of what I know from a health retreat I went to, but I've also heard good things about David Wolfe's book, "The Sunfood Diet Success System."I hope you find a nutritional lifestyle that is suited for you.

Did you have more depression when you quit sugar and other foods etc.. And if so, how long did it take for you to feel better?
Thanks,
Beth

When I quit sugar, refined foods and diet cokes (not that I did it all at one time. I did it gradually), I had more physical symptoms than depression. I was detoxing, and I had headaches and cold symptoms, and there were a couple occassions when I felt intense grief and sadness over certain issues in my life, but in general, I didn't have more problems with depression after changing my diet. Overall, my psychological health improved.
