does anyone here take gabitril?

Posted by dielotosblume on June 13, 2007, at 13:20:17

I have a major problem with anxiety. Neurontin and benzos have helped, but over 5 years, I have developed a tolerance to them such that I can no longer even take a break from them. I used to be able to lower my dosage without a problem. Now I am taking, sometimes 10,000 mgs of neurontin per day.

My doctor refuses to prescribe more than 4800 mgs per day, and suggested I try lyrica instead.

He prescribed 100 mgs 3 times a day, It is not enough. Plus, I have read in the archives here that many people develop a tolerance to this drug as well. I imagine I will be one of them, based on my neurontin experience.

My doc said that if lyrica doesn't work we might try gabitril. I havent' read much good about it here...

Any input would be much appreciated.

I'm sorry to hear you're having problems, but it's refreshing to hear somebody in that situation being so forthright. I think you're probably right about developing tolerance to Lyrica over time - any drug that can compensate for another is likely to be beset by similar problems. I don't know much about Gabitril but what I have read has been mostly negative - seems to cause a lot of impairment for whatever relief it brings, you might as well try Zyprexa or something of that ilk. Nardil is GABAergic and helpful in anxiety states, so that's something to consider if you haven't taken it already.

I've been controlling my anxiety and depression with small doses of codeine since quiting benzos almost a year ago. Obviously codeine too is addictive (if not more so) and I've developed tolerance to it, so I'm going to try and taper off. I suppose the best thing in the light of all this med tolerance/poop-out lark is some sort of therapy to develop better skills in dealing with anxiety.

Quintal that is illegal in the USA a prescription only. I think tolerance develops to all meds why do we even go on them? I think maybe theraphy is longer acting if we get it and it lasts forever encoded in our brains. Love Phillipa

I don't think it's illegal to take the small amounts of codeine in OTC products even in the US - some states allow the sale of products containing codeine to be sold at the pharmacist's discretion so long as they're mixed with acetaminophen or ibuprofen etc. The laws in the US seem much more draconian than in the UK, most likely due to The War On Drugs propaganda.

Meds can provide a window of opportunity that you can use to keep motivated and make changes in your life that will support better mood and lower stress once you come off medication. I think the coming off part is something that's been forgotten in modern psychiatry. In the past drugs seem to have been used more to give people a break from stress and depression, much like a holiday can improve your mood and stress level, and to help motivate people in therapy rather than being seen as correcting a chemical imbalance (and therefore requiring life-long treatment).

Thank you for your response. I am sorry that you have to relace benzos with codeine, but I, too, have been in a similar situration with vicodin I sought it out like a blood hound.

I KNOW my doc os going to try gabitril. I also guess it will be a waste of time and money.

I have tried nardil. It was good but the side effects were not. I had to go to 90 mgs before I saw any real relief, so I guess I have to think about that...can I tolerate sleeping all afternoon, not sleeping all night, anad gaining anymore weight.

I just wondered if I had any other options. Sigh.

Thanks for your response, and good luck wiht the codeine.

Quintal see what really makes me angry is that the docs here say on no a vicodin is addicting yet they prescribe benzos like candy and antipsychotics and especially antidepressants and claim the antidepressants aren't addictive just look at the withdrawal board every type of med. So if an opiate makes you better feel happy what's wrong with it for a while while you get your life in order and then wean off all meds unless bipolar or schizophrenic or such? Love Phillipa

Dielotosblume,

I was on gabitril in combination with risperdal and prozac long ago. It helped me, but I was tired and gained some weight. How about Geodon? It works as a mood stabilizer.

tgo,

Thank you for your suggestion. I have already been on geodon, with success that only acted a few weeks.

Thanks again.

Tolerance and addiction make long term use a no-no. Tolerance to pain meds icreases rapidly. I had surgury (3) last fall and was takign 1 percocet every 6 hours. Wihin 6 weeks I needed 4-5 to get same effect. I neede to taper off which took a month. The last pill is excrutuating for 8 days. No sleep, intestinal probs and joint pai. O tookclonodint and zanax on occasion for sleep. Not a drug for therapy.
