I don't think it's illegal to take the small amounts of codeine in OTC products even in the US - some states allow the sale of products containing codeine to be sold at the pharmacist's discretion so long as they're mixed with acetaminophen or ibuprofen etc. The laws in the US seem much more draconian than in the UK, most likely due to The War On Drugs propaganda.
Meds can provide a window of opportunity that you can use to keep motivated and make changes in your life that will support better mood and lower stress once you come off medication. I think the coming off part is something that's been forgotten in modern psychiatry. In the past drugs seem to have been used more to give people a break from stress and depression, much like a holiday can improve your mood and stress level, and to help motivate people in therapy rather than being seen as correcting a chemical imbalance (and therefore requiring life-long treatment).
