Does anyone know about interactions between Parnate and soy products??

Hi,
I believe most soy is OK. I never had a problem while on parnate with soy milk and soy cheese, though I'd check with the Dr. before you eat it.
However, hydrolyzed soy protein (which is in things like gravy packets and almost all canned soup) gave me a really bad reaction on 2 occasions.
Once I called a nurse in the middle of the night with the awful headache and she told me that hydrolyzed soy and/or vegetable protein is allowed to contain MSG and is counterindicated while on MAOIs.
Hope this is helpful.

Hi. I posted this before, but it kind of got buried right away and maybe you'd be interested.
Hey, a guy I know takes a MAOI--it's Parnate. BUt when I told him I was using this board he said be sure and say how he went to the ER after eating some Kon Pao chicken at this place he eats at all the time. Told me it must have been the sauce and he didn't guess how much soy sauce was it, plus they told him at the ER it might have had red wine in it too, which he says is another thing he can't eat.
So he's fine now but says he's never going to eat anything oriental that has a brown sauce. He said fried rice probably has lots of soy, too, so he just eats the white kind and the sweet and sour stuff. So I guess always ask about the soy sauce, because they put it in everything.

From what I've read, eating soy products, particularly soy sauce, while taking Parnate is NOT really OK. I've been taking Parnate for ages and never had a hypertensive crisis. I probably had Chinese food w/soy sauce countless times but maybe their particular brand and/or quantity of soy sauce were within safe parameters. One never knows, do one? There are differences in tyramine levels in different brands of soy sauce and everyone reacts to medications and the "forbidden foods" differently. I'd suggest that anyone taking an MAOI really err on the side of caution with soy products.

I've read that the amount of tyramine in soy sauce is variable, so the best thing is to stay away from it. Also that stored tofu is bad. I think miso is probably an absolute no-no, because it is fermented.
I've been investigating the food restrictions because I will be starting an MAOI in about 3 or 4 weeks.

There are plenty of posts about dietary restrictions in the archives, I think sometime around August or Sept. 2001. Searching MAOI diet may get you to them.
Specifically about soy products, a previous poster has it correct...hydrolyzed soy protein is a no-no. Fresh tofu is fine, but fermented or marinated is not. Soy milk should be fine, but you want to watch the expiration date, as you do on all things. I personally tend to avoid soy protein at all, because I'm pretty conservative about my diet and I am not a vegetarian.
You may find more specific info. from the archives, as there is a TON of stuff there. Also, any research or lists produced prior to 1996 is likely to be more conservative than necessary. They did not start measuring the tyramine in foods until then.
Good luck to you,
gg

I haven't been on an MAOI in a long time, but when I did take Parnate, I often wondered about foods like tofu, soy milk, etc. I never did find out the answer, but I do know that when you are on MAOI, you must stay away from fermented foods, so I would definitely stay away from MISO, which is fermented soy bean paste, I believe. I'm uncertain about tofu. I think soy sauce is prohibited. Have you checked out Dr. Ivan Goldberg's website, "Depression Central"? I think he has a lot of MAOI information on that site.

Hi. Soy sauce gave me a hypertensive experience. But I found one that isn't fermented and it's yummy. It is a Bragg product. http://www.bragg.com/products/liquidaminos.html
You can read about it above.

When you had your hypertensive experience, do you know how much soy sauce you consumed? I recently read that up to 25 mg (probably about 1 1/2 tablespoons) should be safe.
Thank you,

LOL!
I don't know how much I consumed because it was in an Asian dish. I completly forgot that I shouldn't eat it ... and then it was too late. I thought my head would explode, but obviously it didn't. I didn't go to the hospital, just went home and lay in the dark. I really should have gone somewhere to see how high my BP went but I didn't.
Good luck with the Marplan!
