Is this an example of Effexor Withdrawal?

Posted by AnneL on August 30, 2001, at 23:55:38

I have been diligent in taking Effexor every single day. Yesterday I couldn't remember whether or not I took my meds and did not want to risk taking a double dose, so I figured it was safer to err on the side of caution and not take it. Mistake, mistake!! I felt as if I were hallucinating all night long and was trapped
and couldn't get out. Has anyone ever had this experience with missing a dose? I also wonder whether or not Klonopin taken at bedtime can cause this type of sleep pattern? I was half expecting to get vertigo or electric-type brain shocks yesterday, but that never occurred. I would imagine that it must take more than 1 missed dose to cause the "classic" withdrawal symptoms, but maybe not. Any ideas what happened to me last night? I took my meds as usual today and am hoping that I don't have a repeat of a very "psychedelic" experience. (I'am getting too old to think that this was a "cool" experience, and instead it scared the you-know-what out of me!) Thanks for your input, Anne :)

Hi, If I miss a dose I feel symptoms that very day, I have not felt exactly like you have described, but I have felt very trapped and like I couldnt tell whether I was dreaming or not. One of the first signs I get when I miss a dose is extreme head spins and my eyes see blury, then I get headaches.

I have a friend who missed two doses and was taken to the emergency room. That has scared me enough to not miss a single dose ever. I am on 75 mg at this point. I was wondering why you all are on such a high dose?

150mg and higher is 'supossed' to be the effective effexor dose. I myself am not on it anymore. I started at 37.5 and went up to 75 and it turned me from being badly depressed to having constant mind torture and suicidal thoughts. But my depression is caused by accutane so I doubt such an effect would occur to most anyone. I had this worsening of depression effect from other meds as well. But none as severe as effexor. perhaps because effexor is very potent? and therefor for most others could be very effective.

When I was on Paxil, I was also diligent in taking it every single day. On the rare occasoins that I forgot, I immediately got the "electric head" shock thing and felt out of sorts.

I've been on Klonopin a long time and recently switched to taking it at bedtime and have never had that type of sleep pattern (thank goodness). It would be my GUESS that because Effexor is in and out so quickly, that those symptoms were indeed caused by the missed dose and would get worse if you continued to forget to take it. I doubt that Klonopin had anything to do with it.

> First of all, thanks to all you posted a response to my inquiry. I had a beautiful sleep last night with no problems so I guess I have found the answer to my own question. The wierd-like hallucinating for lack of a better description did not return last night as I am back on track with my Effexor. I like Effexor but occassionally wonder how difficult it will be to taper off. Oh well, I guess it is not wise to have one's pain in advance, is it?!!

Hi.

The dose of Effexor XR ranges from 75 mg. all the way up to 600 mg! Hypertension is seen in 20% of patients who take a dose of 400 mg. or higher according to statistics provided by my pdoc. According to my pdoc 225 mg. is a dose that may help those who have not reached a point of remission or who have a relapse of their symptoms on a lowe dose. When I bumped my dose up from 150 mg. to 225 mg. I really noticed a great improvement in energy, mood, etc. :) Anne

I used to experience a rebound spliiiting headache some mornings if I had taken the previous day's dose too early. I also hallucinated on Effexor some pleasant some not so pleasant stuff just before falling asleep. Never really bothered me, though.

old hippy, used to this sort of thing
