Fortunately I have past experience that I can be wrong about humans. There must be different dynamics at work.
Another truck ran me over. Well, the whole family really. MIL is in ICU, husband fainted at hospital on hearing talk of living wills and now his OCD is acting up. I think the protective function of OCD really does bear investigating. It is so much safer to focus on fears you know are unrealistic about germs on a hospital floor than it is to focus on realistic fears of parents dying.
My poor son. We're trying to prepare him generically for death, without saying too much about any one grandparent. Husband's family prefers denial, and I must say it's worked well for them. Don't want to mess with what works.
