Hi Kara -
I wish I could say something as lovely as what Greg said, but I'm afraid I'm more knowledgable about noise :)
I had a delightful experience some years back when the unit upstairs from me was renovated. Oh, the sawing and drrrrillllinnnng and screeching and hammering! (Oh wait the screeching was me lol) They actually drilled right through my ceiling and left a big hole!
As Sabina and Shar mentioned, white noise and ear plugs are good for dealing with this sort of thing. Something else I did at times was to wear my Walkman and play soothing music - I didn't want to compete with the cacophony.
For what it's worth, I've found being alone much more preferable to a painful relationship. And it takes time, but the heartbreak does lessen.
Wishing you a magic parasol to gently take you from the storms to earth.
