I think "hopelessly romantic" is a sweet idea, but overrated. (Maybe I'm just a hopelessly UNromantic one, too!)
I believe that love and relationships require real, hard work and lots of commitment and compromise...over and over again. It also requires that both parties have the strength and emotional maturity to contribute to the relationship.
I don't necessarily believe in soul-mates at first sight either, at least not in practice (I love it in literature and songs and dreams and wishes, because it's a beautiful concept.) I think a person can be compatible with many other people, and that you can sometimes develop INTO a soulmate with the one you choose to stay with over time.
The divorce rate tells me that ~50% of the people haven't found that perfect person.
But I hope -- truly hope, Susan, that you find the man of your dreams -- someone to care for you and be there for you and vv.
And Dinah, I have to give you big fat kudos for making your relationship work so long...you call yourself unromantic, but I think that the work you put into the marriage speaks to a high level of commitment & love. :)
