>>>Why do you feel so strongly that you must champion the mental health profession and challenge so vociferiously any statements you feel cast them in an unkind light?
I am not championing anything - why do you use that particular word? I feel that you have made a conclusion - have you?
I have been exploited by a very damaging therapist too but also been helped by another wonderful therapist.
There are no easy answers but I try to remember that my horrible experience is one of several I've had.
People have trouble seeking help the way it is, without having the history/mythology of psychology placed on them. I was afraid of seeking help because of all the stories I had heard about therapy et al. It truly skewered my perceptions of "normality".
>>>What is it about your background that makes you take this position? Are you working in the field and so feel personally attacked?
I don't work in this field but know many who personally do - the ones I do know (& I know quite a few) work hard to advocate for their patients in many arenas.
I'm wondering why, though, you feel I'm championing for them. I said, many times - there are inherent problems and abuses.
I do think abuse and trauma affect how we see things. It certainly does for me.
Trauma and abuse changes the hardware we have - sometimes I think discussions can be re-traumatizing without either party meaning to.
>>>>Quibbling about things like the difference between assessment and diagnosis is not relevant to the actual points being made and jumping on any little discrepancy does shut down discussion quickly. It is silencing.
It is not quibbling - someone who may be thinking about seeking help may be frightened by the myth that they can be diagnosed and labelled within a short period of time. The fear of stigmatization is enormous. What is wrong with presenting an alternate view?
The DSM states professionals should refrain from diagnosing within a short period of time. Indeed axis II dignosises *should be* delayed until the axis I is cleared - but does that happen 100% of the time? no.
So, it's not quibbling - & I'm disappointed/upset at the use of minizimizing words when I am just trying to get my point across. That, to me, feels silencing as well.
Perhaps it just a difference in communication style.
