I'm certainly not advocating that you put it away forever! But if it feels unsafe to you to keep thinking about it, then I think you should put it away - and take it out when you can safely think about it.

I put away the issue of my first therapist for 5 months. When it came back up on its own I was much more ready to deal with it.

With other issues I might bring them back up the next session (though I didn't today - I really do need a little break, and what we did talk about was just as important).

I bet that if you show a willingness to take things out of the box, he won't be so hesitant for you to put things IN the box.
