In reply to Trileptal for depression?, posted by Lamdage22 on August 2, 2016, at 9:41:39
I take 1200mgs/Trileptal daily (600mgs x 2) for Bipolar I or...something. Anyway...
..ideally, you should at least do a baseline blood sodium check and another one a bit later...I wanna say 12 weeks later.
Its not for depression. Its used for agitation, mania and hypomania, and sometimes aggression and anger issues. Its cleaned up Tegretol.
I will say...I'm prone to psychotic agitated depression, and Trileptal does help with both my hypomania and the agitated part of bad depression. It is not, however, good for depression by itself ((my opinion)).
It can be sedating. Are you sure you want to add another sedating Rx pill to your ongoing treatment combo?
On the plus side...sometimes, people find that adding an anti-convulsant can keep their neuroleptic dose the same (avoid dosage escalation) or even taper a bit, which is always a good thing, from a safety perspective. I seem to recall reading that Lamictal is particularly good for this, but I dunno if I remember correctly...
If you take Trileptal, watch out for sedation and cognitive weirdness. I take lots of vitamins in large part because of the psych meds...the antiseizure drugs deplete c, e, b complex, d, and coenzyme q10 (so do neuroleptics, btw). I'd recommend supplements, personally.good luck!
