To me, the important question is whether a person is being productive and caring and working for common good; helping others, being creative, growing as a person, and able to love; whether they're doing things in life that are important to them long-term. If beer or illegal drugs or antidepressants HURT those larger goals, then they should probably be changed. If they help get to those goals or are neutral toward them, then… I don't see the issue.

Yeah. I hope some day there are much better tests for psych treatment.

I think you're right about that. Not for all pdocs, of course; but it seems to be alarmingly widespread in psychiatry.
