The evidence seems to be that the uptake systems are associated with drug response, if not with the disorder itself:
I suppose the key is the ability to attain a homeostatic state that has the same functionality as an euthymic individual's.

I believe very strongly that the current pharmocopoeia is not used to maximum benefit because this information is not routinely used to guide treatment. It is certainly easier to study gene effects on treatment response, than to design new drugs.
