I took myself (with my dh) to the hospital when I wigged out on Lexapro. I was apparently having akathasia (but didn't know it). Anyway, I was in the psych unit for 3 days- it wasn't at all like you imagine.
MOst of the people in there were fairly typical; just suffering from depression or bipolar (a few were schizophrenic) but I made friends with everyone there.
I learned a lot seeing what some people have to cope with every single day. It definitely opened my eyes and gave me a compassion for other's like I had never known before.
Anyway, the food was bad but other than that, everything was good (minus my wigging out most of the time). They kept me medicated but were very kind to me. I slept most of the time.
Once they figuerd out I was just reacting poorly to meds, they gave me medication and sent me home.
I didn't see padded walls or anything. Not nearly as scarey as they make it out to be in movies and such.
