This board is a little tough to navigate at first. It should be a link at the top of your screen called "psycho-babble alternative"
Try to find the posts by Ron Jones within the last 2 weeks, they are pretty recent with one actually being the most recent post today. I will copy and paste a few of the things he mentioned about Magnesium (yes it has been magnesium believe it or not, that they have found useful in studies).
I actually took two Magnesium Asporotate 400 mg pills this afternoon that I found at a health food store and it seemed to give me an extreme calming effect for my anxiety and depression within a few hours (not sure if that has anything to do with what Lithium/mood stabilizers do as far as feelings) but that is what I experienced.
If you try Magnesium, be sure to buy Mag not in oxide form as most stores sell. I read a post by Larry Hoover who mentioned it doesn't get processed very well at all. The Mag I bought today from Solary contained magnesium as aspartate, citrate and orotate). Not sure which specific type, if any (maybe it's just magnesuim) helps stabilize mood like Lithium in recent studies.
Here is what some of his posts had to say (I think there is more, I will try to find it and post it here):
"Prior to ww II magnesium was used to treat manic depression.Mcgill University, which is in canada, has a big study that says it works better than lithium with no side effects.800 milograms a day .200 milograms 4x a day.Magnesium is the co enzyme for the inositol monophoshate enzyme that has been found to be defective in manic depression.Dr. Bruce Ames says the use of a large dose of the co enzyme can correct a defective enzyme."
"I sent an E mail to the Dr. who did the study and he gave me a med journal.Look up the University on the web and write them.A man in Texas ,George Eby ,swears it works.Look at Pub Med.com. They have resarch from all over the world. The inositol monophoshate enzyme was found to be defective on chromosone 18.Research in Norway found this and at NIH.Dr York at Duke University found that lithium inhibits this enzyme and others.I do not know how to talk to these DR.s. They are very nutty ."
