I've done a little research, and apparently, trimipramine acts much like an atypical anti-psychotic, by effectively blocking 5-HT2 and dopamine receptors. 5-HT2 antagonism has been shown to cause an anti-depressant/anxiotylic response, so that is one possible mechanism. Also, trimipramine has some anti-cortisol properties which may have something to do with it's AD effect.

Overall though, it seems to be quite the mystery drug.
