Help! Under a lot of stress and anxiety

Posted by Deneb on October 28, 2010, at 0:58:39

I'm not sure what I should do. I am job hunting and it is really stressing me out. My heart often starts racing and sometimes I hyperventilate and get butterflies in my stomach.

Pdoc told me to do progressive muscle relaxation several times a day. I tried to do it today after my heart won't stop racing, but it didn't work. I took 60mg Inderal LA instead. I also have a prescription for the regular generic 40 mg non long acting propranolol. Which would be better to take in my instance?

Also what can I do to get rid of this anxiety? It's awful.

Deneb

What meds are you currently on, besides Propranolol?

Supps:
Moderate to intense excercise followed by a thorough meditative stretch
Holy Basil-New Chapter is best
Magnesium-taurinate, glycinate, citrate, or malate
Ashwagandha
L Theanine-Natural Factors Suntheanine
Kira or Serofin St. John's Wort
Fish oil
StressCare by Himalaya

Meds:
Low dose lexapro
Very low dose Klonopin

I take (or am supposed to take anyways) 20 mg citalopram, 0.75 mg risperidone and 60 mg fluoxetine daily. I take either 60 mg Inderal LA or 40 mg propranolol as need for racing heart etc.

I've been kind of bad about taking my meds recently.

My pdoc won't give me a benzo. She only gave me 3 0.5 mg really small dissolvable Ativan once for a scary medical procedure I was going to get.

Pdoc recommends exercise too. I should do that more.

I already take fish oil, but a very small dose. I'll look into the other supplements.

Thanks Morgan!

Take your meds daily! Sorry, not trying to talk down to you like I'm your doctor or parent : ) Do you think not taking your meds consistently has anything to do with you not feeling as well lately?

I really think you might want to try New Chapter's Holy Basil before anything else, it's worked great for me and others that are also on medications. Also get some Magnesium. Then try some of the others if you feel you need more help. You would be surprised at how well some supplements compliment medications and give you added relief.

Job searching is very stressful even for those or some that take or need no meds at all. Be careful with all that inderal. Phillipa

You only just started your job search. It could be several months before you find something. It took me 18 months. You will not be able to handle all of your anxiety for 18 months! I hate to recommend it, but maybe you need a benzo. You need to be at least calm enough to do breathing exercises and meditation.

How do you spend your day? How much time do you spend looking for a job?

YOU NEED TO TAKE ALL OF YOUR MEDS! Start up on your meds again and hopefully you will feel better in a few weeks. You will probably still be anxious but not as bad as you do now.

She wrote that she hasn't been taking her meds so it's not the prozac. I was on 100 mg of Prozac and it was calming. So it's different for everyone.

I really don't know. I've been skipping the Celexa and Risperdal at night some nights because they make me sleep too much and I have a lot to do. I often have to get up early now to see my employment specialist, go to workshops, etc. Then in the morning sometimes I am so rushed to get out the door that I forget my Prozac.

I spend my days going to different employment workshops, studying for the government tests, getting my WHMIS certification, seeing my employment specialist and this other women who works at this other employment agency. I also work on my cover letters and resumes, look for jobs, call for leads, research my career etc. I spend a few hours each day working on all this stuff.

I'm really not used to doing so much. I've spent most of this year sleeping and surfing the web. I'm not sleeping early as much now.

Missing your Risperdal is not good. I imagine that it helps your anxiety. Maybe you can figure out a time to take it when it won't affect you during the day.

It depends. Sometimes I spend a good 5 to 6 hours at it, other days 1 or 2. Busing everywhere takes a while too.

Yes, taking the bus IS draining. You spend so much time traveling. Ideally you should be spending around 6-7 hours a day looking for work (workshops, sending out resumes etc.) You have to treat it as a job. When you get up in the morning make sure you get dressed and then you can start your job searching endeavours. Don't stay in your PJs as tempting as though that may be. Make a schedule. Decide how much time you will spend on cold calling, resume and cover letters etc.

You have to be very organised and methodical.

I know you can do this!

Thanks Maxime, I planned on doing WHMIS training today, but I was just too tired. I hope I can handle a full time job.

Maybe that is something you should discuss with your pdoc. Can you handle a full time job. The last thing you need is to burn out on first job. There is nothing wrong with working part time. I know you don't get as much money ... but your sanity is more important.

Thanks for caring Maxime

I'm doing OK at this moment. I took 0.25 mg Risperdal as a prophylaxis at around 5:30 Eastern Time. I think it is helping because I'm OK right now. I still feel kind of unstable though.

I think if you keep taking the risperdal, the unstable will slowly go away.

I hope this keeps up!
