booze and writing

Posted by cockeyed on September 23, 2005, at 0:03:16

This is perhaps not worth consideration. This is a WRITING board. Now I know that writing involves review and revision. But I'm either lazy or embarrased...I don't like reading what I've written. Correcting, emending, etc., okay.
But reading the stuff that comes from the fingers can be...off-putting? And the format of typing is a problem. I've got stone-fingers syndrome and it bugs me to have to go back and redact, or whatever. Sometimes I'm conscientious and try to consider the reader, but most of the time I'm chasing the flight of geese that I consider ideas.
Do people care about spelling or typos, well who knows? On a printed page they seem to, but on the net it seems anything goes. Maybe meaning as if there were a legal document involved. But I doubt it.
Still old habits, and courtesy would de-mand that I'd write clearly...and, well, it just hit me who gives a damn. I'm my own universe, that's what I am. I've almost got it down right...but does it matter. Does anybody give a damn about typos and just plain laziness.
Is this board for reading or for one to just make a mess? cockeyed.

most good writing, in my opinion, is stream of consciousness writing.

typos don't matter, punctuation doesn't matter, spelling only matters as far as recognizing the word you mean it to be...

but that's just one person's opinion...
mine.

if you can use the word 'redact' correctly, I'm not going to cavil about a typo.

Please don't use language that could lead others to feel offended. Sorry, but the above could be considered to be bypassing automatic asterisking.

If you or others have questions about this or about posting policies in general, or are interested in alternative ways of expressing yourself, please see the FAQ:

http://www.dr-bob.org/babble/faq.html#civil

One possibility is to ask another poster to be your "civility buddy" and preview posts before you submit them:

Follow-ups regarding these issues should be redirected to Psycho-Babble Administration. They, as well as replies to the above post, should of course themselves be civil.

Thanks,

Bob

Listen, mate, when Norman Mailer first submitted his manuscript for "The Naked and the Dead", he had his grunts talk like real soldiers do. That meant it was "f*ckin' this" and "f*ckin' that" throughout the book -- which, incidentally, I consider a masterpiece, as do many others. Finally, fed up with the publisher's demand that he clean up the salty language, Mailer came up with a solution: a word that would sound alike if spoken aloud, and his famous word "fug" was born as a substitute for "f*ck." So the book, when published, read "fuggin' this" and "fuggin' that." Might want to give that a try and spare yourself a few PBCs. Unless somehow "fug" joins "f*rt" on the list of verboten words here. Strewth! Anything's bloody possible with the language police around these parts. Atticus

Atticus, Thanks. I didn't realize the long reach of homeland security. And if I may dare to be so, well, uncivil as well as displaying my ignorance, is the term "friggen" considered un-civil. Oh, boy, just recalled a line from Frank
Zappa: "Who are the brain police?" Gotta root that one out of my collection. In fact some Zappa might do me a world of good.
I read "the Naked and the dead" a long time ago. I also read "Catch-22" which really scared me out of the last vestiges of religious belief's. Joseph Heller? Forget "Texas Chain Saw Massacre" Heller wrote the sequel to Moby Dick. I've been thinking of re-reading that and Tom Jones as an antidote. Thanks again for reminding me that civility in writing perhaps should reflect the language of the civilians. Cockeyed.

It isn't the long reach of Homeland Security that's the issue, mate -- it's the long reach and punitive measures of Babbleland Security that I was suggesting a way to sidestep. I was once blocked for six weeks for forgetting to put a bloody asterisk in "f*ck." I was so disgusted by this, I didn't return to this site for eight months. Nobody holds a grudge like an Irishman.
