I figured it out
The crazies
Spend too much time in their heads
They don't come out
And live
And roll with the punches
Like the non-crazies doSometimes the head place is good
It is comfortable
If stressful
Sometimes its such a bad place
And then you can't escape
Cuz its your own head
It can be so badLeast if the outside world goes bad
you can go in your head
But theres no escape from your head
Thats the problem
That needs to be solved
Make the head safe
Make it not badNeed to get out
Need to get IN the world
Need to make the head a TEMPORARY refuge
In times of need
Need to make the bad stuff in head go away
So it can be safe, and good
A good refugeMaybe thats why some people shoot themselves
In the head
To make it go away
Unfortunately
You need your head
Or your dead
Sh*ts

i live in my head a lot too.
when i realise it isn't so productive...
i do this mindfulness meditation exercise.
the point of the exercise is to focus on ONE thing with all your attention
you can even pick something in your head if you like...
or you can pick a smell
how something feels
how something looks (form and colour)
how something sounds
and if i manage to really focus all my attention on that...
i don't notice my thoughts.

Everytime someone replys to a post of mine I'm SO tickled. I feel so honored somehow that someone would take the time to actually listen to me. Its weird.

> How long do you do this for?
I do it for between 30 seconds and 5 minutes several times a day. It is hard. I started with 30 seconds. You can feel your attention wander away from whatever you are trying to be attending to and back to other stuff - and you are just supposed to draw it back without giving yourself a hard time about it. Over and over and over. And... In a way the point isn't about successfully focusing on one thing for however long you have set yourself - in a way the point is just the process of focusing and refocusing your attention.
>I'm not very good at keeping my mind on one thing for long.
Neither am I. I don't think many people are. You can think of attention as something of a muscle and the more you exercise it the better your control over it becomes...

:-)
I feel like that too.
You just kind of post stuff
And sometimes it feels like it is going into a big black hole or whatever
But then people respond
(sometimes)
:-)

Don't be sorry, it's okay.
Just that last part, it may be too much for some people to read about that image...so I just put the *trigger* warning there for you...that way someone who knows they can be easily upset, can just choose not to read.
...it's not about me, really, but I did kinda promise Dr. Bob recently I'd look out for this on the boards whenever I could.
We help each other here - that's how we learn and get more comfortable.
Glad you're posting more, muffled. I read all your posts...even if I don't reply. Sometimes, a person just doesn't know what to say, you know?

I like the words "crazies" and "non-crazies"
I like to think the crazies and non-crazies live in different worlds, the crazies know secret handshakes and have ongoing commentaries about everything going on in the world in their heads, while the non-crazies are just singing songs in their heads -la, la, la, la, and have NO idea about the crazies secret communities living just under their noses
-talk about living in your head :-)

muffled, I posted a reply which I just read. Too brief and crude to bear apologizing.
I just went out and made a complete fool of myself because I thought kids were out damaging cars. Instead it was a family get together. My head said villainy was afoot and so I went out and proved myself to be a crazy. Christ, but now I'm scared. I went out of my way to be a vigilante and I can't even keep my own head on straight. Yeah, my head should be stuffed with mushrooms. Now I've got to go apologize to nabors. Oh how I look forward to eating humble
pie. cockeyed.

Hey Muffled,
Another long-term head resident checking in. Alex's advice about mindfulness meditation was good and I should do it a lot more than I do because it really does help.
The real trick is not to try to not think, but to just let the thoughts float by like clouds and not attach to them. You can do mindfulness mediation with a candle or a photo or some other object as the focus for your attention too. Even simply counting the breath can be a good place to start.
