Things at work are very, very slow for me. I like it when I'm extremely busy and the day flies by. I've asked numerous times for extra assignments, busy work, etc. but there is nothing to do -- or no one wants to give up any of their responsibilities.
Each day, I appear at work, get my assignments done and then sit there reading the news online for hours on end. Without anything to do, I'm left alone with my thoughts of how bad my life is starting to become again. It could be the depression talking but I just can't bare to sit there at work much longer and my contract isn't up for another two months so I'm technically trapped.
Any advice to make the time pass or keep me from thinking about the depression that's taken over my life one too many times?

I've never had this problem at work. :(
But at school I used to work ahead in the book. Teachers rarely complained if I wasn't paying attention because I was working ahead.
Is there some way to work on things that haven't been assigned to anyone? I'm not sure what size company you work for. Smaller ones are often lacking documentation in job descriptions or procedures. Is there any work you can volunteer to do that would qualify as above and beyond?

Be lucky. I'd rather be busy and have time pass quickly instead of watching the clock every minute.

With the way my job is setup, I need to allocate my time (on a timesheet) to the projects that I am assigned to. This prevents me from helping other teams or working ahead on a new project. Sounds stupid that they'd rather have me sitting there doing nothing and charging time to a project versus helping another team but that's the way it is.

It's a shame there's no suggestion box that bypasses the immediate power structure. I can't believe that there's no one who'd object to such a structure.
I'm not sure my predicament is significantly better. I just realized last night that what was wrong with me was utter terror. I've been hiding from utter terror. I don't feel up to the work challenges that are facing me in the next few months, and as usual I responded by retreating. I'm sure there's a happy medium between being overwhelmed and being bored stiff. :)

Hi Wildflower,
I'm posting this from work even though the internet is monitored. I am bored beyond belief. I also have little to do and what there is I finish in less than an hour a day. I've been reading free novels online at www.gutenberg.org
Since they are all copyright free they were written prior to about 1915. I get sick of the words wretched, vulgar and to-morrow, but at least it gives me something to do. What's really inane is I'm not supposed to be online, I'm honestly expected to just sit here and stare at the wall for 8 hours a day. So I put up a fake word document and pop back and forth.
It doesn't stop my negative I am a complete worthless loser thoughts from popping in, but at least they can go away for awhile.
I wish I could play games, but I'm firewalled from schockwave and the others.
I hate my job. I hate myself for being stuck in this crap job. You have my sympathy, I know how boring your day is. I need to be busy and seem to be falling downwards in my jobs. They get more and more boring at less and less pay. Sorry, I'm really depressed about being stuck here. Didn't mean to jump on your thread.

Is it possible to ask your immediate supervisor if, since you don't have enough work to fill your days, you can do some training in the off hours?
Larger companies sometimes have training libraries, don't they? Or there might be something online.
I guess it would be best if it was at least vaguely related to your current responsibilities.
My first year working, I didn't know enough to be fully occupied. When my father caught me twiddling my thumbs one day, he handed me a great big giant book that was about as interesting as the phone book, and told me to teach myself to type.

>>That sounds like my job. I flip between a Word document and news sites. You might want to try IShouldbeWorking.com if you can get to it.

>>Not a problem. I'm sorry to hear that you're in the same situation as me. Today they finally acknowledged that they are not using my full capacity. I would not be surprised if they pull me off the project I'm supposed to be working on. Why pay an extra person when you don't need them, right?
