I need to quit smoking pot and cigarettes!...

Posted by Colleen D. on November 28, 2004, at 20:04:02

They are taking such a toll on my lungs and the pot does nothing for my anxiety. Anyone out there who had the same goal and achieved it. Oh yeah. With all the drug testing going on in the working world, it may improve my chances of getting a decent-paying job. Why can't I get off there two substances? If the pot is not available, I'm not looking for it but my cigarettes are a MUST have substance for me.

Thanks for any understanding/advice you can lend. I take the "Civil Service" exam on Wednesday!

Colleen

hey colleen

i quit smoking cigarettes just over a month ago (i quit on november 3 at 3:30 in the afternoon to be exact)

while i quit smoking because of the toll it was taking on my pocket book, i can feel my lung functioning increase and my gums getting healthier. these signs are really encouraging me to keep up with my quit.

i have spoken at length on this board before about quitting pot ... but now i smoke a little pot once in a while (haven't smoked pot since i quit smoking cigarettes though so i can't say what will happen in that case)

so how did i quit? cold turkey.
there is an amazing resource at http://whyquit.com/

i told everybody i was quitting - at work, friends, etc so i was committed to the course

most of my friends are non-smokers. i will only be spending extended time with a smoker when my sister comes to visit.

and now that i have got this far, i do not want to back slide and lose my progress. i have quit cold turkey many many many times before and i typically relapse around 2-3 months, usually in times of great emotional stress. so i will have to report back in a few months to say how i'm doing.

but if you really want to quit, you can quit cold turkey! the first week is awful. it gets better after that.

Nicotine patches or gum are available in many countries and double your chances of quitting smoking. The drug Zyban ,available on prescription, may have side effects but it has helped a lot of people.I have seen high doses of fish oil-about 10g per day (total of EPA and DHA-available in supermarkets)- to be useful in some cases too.An interesting article in the British Medical Journal recently is the latest one following up 40,000 British doctors for the last 50 years. The smokers lost an average of 10 years of life.

From my study of psychology, I would suggest you quit smoking pot first and then when you're over that addiction, try tackling the cigarettes. It's just too hard to deny yourself two things at the same time. Humans have a finite amount of self- control.

It also helps to reward yourself with other things while abstaining. Think about how a 3-year-old reacts if you try to take away a toy. They will cry, scream, and hold onto it with superhuman strength. But, if you offer them a new toy, they will happily drop the first one.

Just because we've grown up and learned to control our emotional outbursts doesn't mean we aren't still that screaming toddler on the inside. We get cranky when our toys are taken away.

So, go find yourself a new toy!
Best of luck to you.

That site is awesome! It gave me the push I needed to try again and here in a few hours at will be the 3 day mark. From my experience it's much easier to quit smoking pot than cig's, so deffinently go for that first. Check out that 'why quit' site, it helped a bunch on this end. peace & good luck

I did, for 3 years. Its not a problem, if you realy want to. Atleast the pot was. Ciggarettes I only managed for a max of about 4 months at a time. It may help to take meds while you do this.

too bad you have to quit weed. i do it all the time in the interest of lowering my tolerance to the high quality buds i smoke. every 5-6 mos. or so i notice i'm smoking a little too much bud and my highs are kind of boring. when all you smoke is strains from holland and canada, and your own homemade bubble hash you're just not going to get anything stronger. quitting is quite easy when you realize that you are not actually quitting, someday you will meet your love maryjane again. just look at it as a temporary discomfort- too much of anything is bad. you have to respect the magical weed if you want to partake through your life. and after a vacation your lungs and head will thank you.
now cigs are a different story. terrible things that are totally addictive- supporting terrible people. i smoked for 30yrs. since i was ten, a pack of cigs was .65 cents when i started- 6.00 dollars when i quit. that alone was enough. never mind the coughing, i could hardly smoke a joint anymore without choking all the smoke out,
i quit by starting on wellbutrin 3 weeks before my scheduled quit day. one week before i started listening to a cd that i got from a cessation program, basically a relaxation and hyptnotizm program i listened to daily through the first month of quitting. 2 days before quit day i stocked up on candy, gum, swizzel sticks that i chewed on. you can substitute vegtables and stuff thats healthy but what the hell, your quitting cigs- how UNhealthy can you get? last day i smoked my head off, it was disgusting and that was the point. i threw out most ashtrays, and the ashtrays i kept i put candy in. i started the new day craving a cigarette of course. i recommend a replacement nicotine source such as the patch, gum, chewing tobacco, or some of the herbal remedies that contain nicotine. nicotrol inhalers and nasal spray are available by prescription. i used the nasal spray for three months, i really enjoyed the scent once i got used to the burning in my nose- it was a better delivery system of nicotine than cigarettes- and one day i just quit that and it was easy. i'
ve been off cigs for eighteen mos. now and am thrilled with the results. if you contact your local hospital they can probally direct you to a smoking cessation course that might be covered by your insurance. or call that quit smoking number that you see on tv and they will direct you. the biggest thing, once you go through all this to quit you can never smoke just one cigarrette, this is the hardest part, at least for me.
good luck, medhed.

THANKS TO EVERYONE!!!

Wonderful collection of ideas and resources! I'M GOING TO ASK ABOUT THE INHALER THING WHEN I SEE MY GP. I tired Zyban with zero effect, so I don't think Wellbutrin will work. Anyway...

Thank you, thank you, thank you!!!
