How long do you sleep?

Posted by no_rose_garden on November 16, 2008, at 15:14:33

I always have trouble getting out of bed.
I know different ppl need different amounts of sleep, and I've decided mine is about 10 hours, but i'm still tired usually.
Today, I decided to let myself sleep and turned off the alarm (nixing my 18 mile run...but that's another story) I ended up sleeping 14.5 hours. I actually feel refreshed now and that i got enough sleep (but guilty for not running).

So THE BIG QUESTION???
Is it better to just let yourself sleep as long as you need to OR make yourself wake up?

of couse if i did the former, I would probably get kicked out of school b/c I wouldn't get anything done
:(

What time do you go to bed? I find the later I go to bed the more sleep I need to feel refreshed. But if I go to bed earlier I can get up more refreshed. I need 8 hours to feel my best going to bed by 11.

I sleep a lot too if I have nothing to wake up for. I can sleep over 12 hours. My pdoc thinks it's a side effect of my meds so we are reducing them.

I like sleeping though.

I think it's probably better to force yourself up most days and have one day where you can just sleep to your heart's content.

It's too hard to be productive when you sleep that much everyday.

That's an interesting thought!!

My # of hours differs from time to time & the amount of sleep I need to feel ready to get out of bed seems to vary also.

I got by on 4 hours a night for at least a decade.

I don't recommend it, and envy those who can sleep like logs for 12 hours.

I can sleep (if not disturbed) about 10 hours. It also relates to how much seroquel I might be taking. I just cut my already small dose down, and I feel more awake than I have in a while.
It takes me a while to wake up too. I usually lay there half asleep for a while, unless that nasty alarm attacks me with its awful noise.

"To sleep, perchance to dream...." Well, IF I could sleep more than an hour w/o waking up (w/o being medicated)I might feel like I was getting somewhere. I NEVER feel rested, and I obsess over sleep (as in not getting enough). The key to me is proper sleep hygeine, as in going to bed and getting up at the same times, avoiding caffeine or stress etc. etc... I have struggled with sleep problems for YEARS! I have gone past two+ years getting less than four hours of sleep a night, and it is miserable! Unless I use some sort of benzo, I just cannot fall asleep. I ruminate and think about everything going on in my world. It's a mess!

If I can drag myself out of bed, I make warm milk & honey (or sugar, or stevia) & have it with 2 calcium/magnesium pills.

Usually works wonders.

I take some Valerian Root at night, which helps a bit (I guess). My problem is that I ruminate and think about everything that has gone on that day. Might be a bit on the manic side, I don't know.

I've used Valerian tincture successfully also, but I find that Valerian gives me weird dreams & I have enough of those already!!

:-)) Kath

PS - I use homeopathic remedies for various things. They can get VERY specific, so there might be one for ruminating thoughts.

I'm 'into' alternative methods - have been for decades. There's also a "Bach Flower Remedey" - White Chestnut.

It's for "unwanted & persistent worries & other repetitive thoughts. Mental arguments"

I find the Bach Flower Remedies can work really really well. You can buy them at "health food" stores or "natural food" stores.
