We only put up the old shabby ornaments on our tree this year, because the puppy is all over it. Besides, my son likes those just as well as the more elegant ones (better even). And he did a lot of the decorating, so many of the ornaments are clumped in one place. While the bottom of the tree is bare except for a few metal bells for the puppy to ring.
My son also set up the nativity scene. You can't see the baby Jesus. My son said everyone would want to be looking at the baby, so the other figures are in a tight circle around the baby Jesus with only their backs showing. Makes perfect sense to me.
The walls are hung with the construction paper decorations he's made at church and school over the years.
I think the house has never looked so good. :)
I woke up in the middle of the night and realized that the tradition of a big Christmas morning breakfast has to end. On my glucophage, if I have eggs scrambled with sausages and peppers and lovely biscuits with the oranges from our stockings, I'll never be able to eat the roast beast and yorkshire pudding for early dinner. So next year, we'll move the egg tradition to Christmas eve. That made me feel sad. My husband says I love tradition too much. We had toast and oranges instead, with a light lunch.
My son was so excited yesterday that he hardly ate all day. He was so excited looking at what Santa left this morning that he was trembling. He and the puppy were buried in wrapping paper as he tried to interest her in her new chocolate bone (she prefers her human toys - fingers, toes, or maybe shoes or his toys). And Harry wouldn't chase his new red and green Christmas rope, but he did hold it with his paws and let me put his crown on him. (Harry's the King.)
It was a nice Christmas. :)
So far. I still have my family and the Christmas dinner to go. :-O
Wish me luck. Or maybe I've had more than my quota for Christmas this year. :)

It sounds lovely Dinah!! I love decorations that actually mean things! Our flat (apartment) is tiny, so all we have is a small tree.. But we have decorations (some too big for it, but I nestled them in the branches) from holidays and things that mean stuff to me, and it makes me happy! I want to raid my mums decoration box for the decorations that I remember from my childhood (since dad has died her decorations are all very tasteful!! She wanted that every year, but me and Dad always over ruled her!).. She ahas tons, some dating back to when her and Dad had their first tree in 1959! Some are the most beautiful glass ones from when they lived in Germany in the sixties.. she says they're tacky (very 60's/70's!) but they hold wonderful memories for me!!
A few years before Dad died, he built a little wooden shed for mums nativity, and wired up lights in the roof of it! But this year it didn't work, and it really upset mum.. so I raided my memory for my electrical engineer training, got the multi meter out, then the soldering iron, and in 45 mins it was working as good as new!! I was really pleased I managed it, and it was nice to see mum so happy. I'm teerribly worried that she's not happy.. I *know* she's not happy.. But I don't know what to do about it.
My brothers have been wonderful, and both emailed me photos of the kids opening pressies and things, as they know I miss not being with them.. I thought that was lovely of them.
Its been a nice christmas day all in all!! And Santa spoiled me rotten (and I've been able to wear my new pyjamas all day!!!)!!
Merry Christmas Dinah!

My luck ran out. :))
I messed up nearly every part of dinner. The yorkshire pudding didn't rise. :(
But my parents are behaving rather well.

I'm soooo impressed that you were able to fix the nativity for your mother. Multi meters and soldering irons! I was proud of being able to load my mother's new instant camera. :) It must be great to be able to do things like that.
It sounds as if you and your family have a wonderful close relationship. I think you're really lucky yourself, Nikki. And your Mom is lucky to have such a caring daughter.

I set the kitchen on fire, not once, but twice, yesterday. We managed dinner anyway.
Today, I took the kids over to my mom's (my hubby was too sick to go) so they could see their cousins. There were 12 teenagers/young kids in a pretty small living room that was beautifully decorated with holiday ceramics and china. Within 3 hours they had been yelled at for balls in the house, wrestling with their cousins and at least 2 candle holders had been broken. Oh, and a soda spilled on the floor.
Ho Ho Ho. I'm glad I'm home.
However, my youngest son said the blessing and after thanking God for the food and his family and the ham (grin), he prayed for "all the sick people to get better, especially his dad." How do you stay mad after that? Even my mother melted.

Oh, I had one of them yesterday too!! *laughing*
So.. We just had an Amercian brinch thing (pancakes, eggs, home fries, maple syrup.. ) and I get the home fries going, they're just about done, so I move them to a back burner on the hob so I have room to do the pancakes and eggs. I leave them on a lowish heat, and pop back into the lounge for a ciggie and drink.. then this smell starts wafting through.. Like.. Burning.. took probably 30 seconds for it to click it was burning though.. Rushed back through itno kitchen, and I'd left a box of porridge oats at the back of the stove and they'd caught light and the flames were shooting up!!!!
D'uh me!!! *laughing*
But its hard to screw up too much of a meal like that!!!

I'm sorry you had such excitement, but glad I'm not the only one that does!
My stove only has two burner controls working. I earned the second one lately, and may go back down to one. :) If I want to use the others, I have to retrieve the knob from the drawer. Eight years ago (before psych meds, so maybe I shouldn't rely on that explanation) I turned on the wrong burner and melted and set on fire our plastic sandwich grill. After the fire department had left, and I was banished to my parents till the house was aired out (I was pregnant) I was only allowed one burner knob.

Oh, that *is* sweet. You must be proud of him.
Your mother's house sounds like my aunt's. It had been a while since her kids were little, and her house was too pretty for me to feel comfortable moving when I was little.
I'm sorry your husband wasn't feeling up to going to your Mom's. I can't imagine how difficult it must be for all of you.
We're having a quiet New Year's at home. How about you guys?

I've still not faced the burnt mess up my lovely white tiles and yellow walls in the kitchen *lol*
I once put some baked beans on to heat, and forgot about them, and had left the plastic spoon in them.. very gross!!! And made popcorn in the microwave using an old 70's tupperware bowl that melted all over the pop corn and microwave plate *l*
Kitchen disaster give you the best stories to tell!! *laughing*

Please don't tell this story to anyone in my family. Please. They already took away all the good pots and pans.

Do you mean they haven't thought of hiding the knobs? lol. I have to give my husband points. He didn't hide them. Just put them where I can't absentmindedly turn the wrong one.

Don't know about New Year's yet. Probably at home with movies and Dick Clark. Have decided my resolution for 2004 is to burn all the beautiful candles I keep getting instead of never using them. I've asked myself "what am I waiting for?!"
Have you made one?
