@#*$!@!!! Economy

Posted by mikhail99 on February 13, 2003, at 22:10:54

I'm pretty sure I lost my job today althought I won't know for sure until Fed Ex delivers my notice on Saturday. Can you freaking believe it? Corporate didn't want us to find out until we got our letters but our general manager told us the awful news anyway. The name of the company? Directv. They used to be a good, employee-oriented company but it's for sale so they must bow to the almighty dollar.

And I'm supposed to start prozac tomorrow. How appropriate is that??

OY!

Yes..and I am sure you will be happy to know that a bunch of rich people just likely got richer (or will)because of you being 'downsized'. "The rich get richer...the poor take Prozac."

I feel for you my friend...and let this be a sign we need a *major* revolt against fat-cat corporations who are making billions while the rest of us rot. And..don't forget about the POLITICIANS who let this happen!

Aww I'm so to hear that Mikhail, you made it sound funny, but a lot of us here have a talent for making the most painful things sound comical.

And now you have to wait.. ugh. That's just sh****
what can I say. I'll send you some good thoughts, well maybe the one good thought I have left.
I'm not working, and I managed to make some extra money in the last few days, 1600, which was nice, I thought oh, I can get some decent clothes... luxuries like maybe vegetables. I went to the
dentist, I found out I need to have a tooth fixed, it costs 1800 dollars...
I suppose I should be glad I have the money (almost) but geez...........

Let us know how it goes okay?

UGH, I hate when that happens! We got bonuses this week, the day before the layoffs were announced and our GM was going around telling people not to blow them on new cars and such. (HA!) Mine will now be money to live on when the severance runs out. I should be thankful though, my husband still works for the company and he's a technical guy so his job is very secure. (They need someone to keep this crap on the air!)

Sorry you guys. That's really rotten. I remember our fear when a similar thing happened to my husband's company.

How is the job market where you live? Silly question I know, but there are still some places with better outlooks than others.

Good luck with everything. (Although I remember there's a saying to the effect that the survivors of a cutback aren't much better off than those who are laid off.)

Austin was a major high tech hub so we've had $60,000. a year programmers applying for $28,000.00 a year jobs at the state.
Until the hiring freeze and now layoffs.
Two years ago, Texas had a surplus, now, $10,000,000,000.00 in the hole. It's the Legislature that screws things up, so they come to town for a few months, fire a lot of people, then return to their law practices in a comfy little community. Seagull managers: Fly in, crap on everybody, fly away.
I've only been at the state 2 years and I have learned that politics is way more slimy than even the most cynical can imagine.

I can attest to what Phil has observed. The dot-com balloon did not merely pop in Austin: it was more like the Hindenburg. I know folks for whom job searching is their new full-time career, and has been for some time. Some have been at it for 1 1/2 years. One fellow had five jobs in two years before moving to California. Another told me he knew a programmer who is now bagging groceries at the local 'luxury' food store. Humility has become all the rage.

Curiously, many years ago the state laid me off (actually the whole division) circa Valentine's Day. Mayhap this is a Texas tradition I am unaware of....

So true. I've survived cuts from 400 down to 100 people at my company. Now I feel like I'm doing 3 jobs for one paycheck. They're talking about 'reducing headcount' by 30 more in April. All I can think is "Pick me! Pick me!"

I know things are rough all over. I'm in Colorado and because United Airlines has their hub in Denver, we've had TONS of people released into the slow job market. Add to that Worldcom and other tech workers and the market here sucks. I'm going to try like hell for the federal government, since we're getting ready to go to war and North Korea is acting up, I figure the DOD is going to have their hands full for quite awhile. :-)

I'll get there...thanks everyone for your kind and supportive words, I've never been through a layoff before so it's a bit of a shock still.

See ya!

Yeah, I think we can stop worrying when we join the rich, because in this economy the poor are ....

oh, I just remembered a great cartoon from many years ago.

There was a congressional hearing, and an unseen questioner is saying to a gent in a suit: "Senator, I thought you said we were not going to balance the budget on the back of the poor man."

And the Senator replies, "Well, these cuts will mainly affect women and children."

Been here over half a century, watching this same thing happen, in different ways, over and over. I can't even afford plastic drop cloths and tape for the winders.

Ditto that!

>(Although I remember there's a saying to the effect that the survivors of a cutback aren't much better off than those who are laid off.)

Except, I suppose, that the survivors still have a job, a paycheck, medical and dental insurance, retirement accounts (at least in the state of Texas for state employees), long and short term disability insurance, paid holidays, and vacation time.

Other than that, they're probably just the same as the ones who got canned.

I thought most people in Texas loved everything about it but have recently been meeting people who can't stand it there.(Not the actual place but it's politics and that kind of stuff.) Not that I am saying one place is better than another but many of the Texans I have talked to surprised me in a number of ways (and I don't really want to get into any arguments please, just making observations)

1. A number of Texans don't seem very fond of times when George W. Bush was governor. From t.v. (i know. Who should trust that thing!) you'd think every Texan loves him. I am not from your country so I am going to abstain from voicing my oppinion.
2. Many seem to have quite a fair bit of liberalism in them, even if they are conservative on some issues. SOme are even quite more liberal than some of my Canadian liberal friends. Again I don't want to argue which is better.
3. SOme of the Texans I have met remind me a bit of Newfoundlanders here in Canada in that they are actually some of the nicest people I have met anywhere.

I don't mean to generalize, but even many AMerican friends I have agree with me on these things.

One thing I wish we all had no matter what country we live in, is politicians who brought people of all types together instead of isolating people and having them fight each other. ANyhow thanks and I hope this makes sence.
