Computer Sceen and Depersonalization

Posted by Elle2021 on March 24, 2004, at 1:27:14

Has anyone else noticed if the light from his/her computer screen causes him/her to depersonalize? I depersonalize almost everytime I sit down to the computer. I'm figuring it has something to do with the brightness, although even dimming the screen doesn't help. Any thoughts?

HEY ELLE :) I am wondering ..have you ever been tested for epilepsy or seizure disorder? I ask because I have read that flickering lights and say pinball and so on...even very low light variations can cause seizures. Odd sounds can too...seizures are NOT always the kind you see on TV they can be steppin' outside of yourself like depresonalizaton...please just for a ruke out ask your doc on this and

Depersonalization is difficult to explain. The best way I can put it is a feeling that you are not really you, or as if you are a spectator of yourself and your body movements. A much better definition is on the website below.

Nope, I haven't. My T thinks it's depersonalization. I never thought about epilepsy. I'll bring it up at my next app. Thanks for the heads up.

Hugs to you too (((Fallen)))

Oh, I wasn't sure what you meant by "depersonalization" either, so thanks for the link.

I don't feel depersonalized when I am alone. I do sometimes when I am speaking to a group or in a class.

I don't know if it's the same thing, but I think some of my memories are depersonalized. I am aware of events in my life having happened, but I don't really remember them as though I was there. It's more like I saw them in a movie or TV show.

depersonilization also called decentralization exuse spelling , is like you feel like you are stoned , completely high on something even though you are completely sober.
think of the feeeling of being ina huge shopping centre basically everything dosent seem real and there are just masses of people and colours everywhere and you are just a small person in the masses of people , you feel like you arent really there in a sense.
ive heard depersonilization is when u go through brief seconds or moments from neurosis to psychosis but u arent psychotic , i would chose to rather not believe this , wat do u people think

According to my therapist, a depersonalization/derealization episode usually is started because of anxiety. She said it's a way of escaping something that is going on; it's a coping mechanism. I had a lengthy discussion with her over it and she assured me I wasn't going crazy! :) Thankfully! So I don't believe the person is psychotic, as psychotic would mean that the person is experiencing a loss of contact with reality. When I depersonalize I don't lose contact with reality, I'm just not "there." If that makes sense??

I used to tan in a solarium, and occasionally I would experience depersonalization afterwards.

Probably the anxiety of speaking in front of people (performance anxiety) causes you to depersonalize.

I think it is the same thing. I have had events happen to me that weren't very fun and although I remember that they happened, I depersonalized, so I can't remember specific details. I think depersonalizing is a way of coping with something or suffering through something you can't escape. Since you can't leave physically, you "leave" mentally.

Do you happen to get migraines?

Lights and computer screens can trigger migraines when I'm susceptible. And they can also trigger lesser migraine related phenomenon, like depersonalization.

My therapist asked me the same question. I do get headaches ocassionally, but not before or after I start to depersonalize. We talked about it and decided it had to do with remembering things from my past (that I don't want to remember), and also that performance anxiety causes it. But, the first thing she asked me was if I get migraines! You are so sharp Dinah!! :)

The weird thing about migraines is that you can get aura without a headache on occasion. Oliver Sacks book "Migraines" is fascinating about all the things that migraines do. I ended up feeling a lot less odd after I read it.

But if you're looking at something upsetting on the computer screen, or something that reminds you of your past, or something that makes you anxious, then that certainly would explain it.

But if the light from the computer screen itself does it, I wouldn't rule out neurological stuff like migraines.

My first sign of migraines was ocular migraines. No headache at all. But spots of lost vision in my right eye lasting about half an hour to forty five minutes.

I have episodes of depersonalization often. Certain things seem to trigger them, such as focusing on something way too much, listening to a long winded person talk, and fluorescent lighting - especially
