According to my therapist, a depersonalization/derealization episode usually is started because of anxiety. She said it's a way of escaping something that is going on; it's a coping mechanism. I had a lengthy discussion with her over it and she assured me I wasn't going crazy! :) Thankfully! So I don't believe the person is psychotic, as psychotic would mean that the person is experiencing a loss of contact with reality. When I depersonalize I don't lose contact with reality, I'm just not "there." If that makes sense??
