Hey, anybody know of any good books for Anger Management? My shrink is suggesting that I start going to an Anger Management group, but honestly, I can't stand any of that group therapy stuff. I believe that I can teach myself whatever it is that I need to know just as well as any group therapy will work. So I'd love to hear your recommendations.

Just a thought, but since anger management is an interpersonal process, wouldn't a group situation offer opportunities and advantages that a book just couldn't provide?

I think a book will give advice along the lines of count to ten, change your 'perception' of statements made to you, take yoga, etc.
Have you tried group? It sounds like you get angry thinking about it.
Group is highly effective for anger management because you'll have plenty of opportunities to control your anger. People will piss you off unexpectedly and that will help you learn appropriate responses. I don't think a book would change the behavior.

Yes, I highly recommend "How To Stop Worrying And Start Living" by Dale Carnegie. Situations that cause worry and stress also cause anger, and there are specific chapters on dealing with anger
(i.e. how to handle ingratitude, the high cost of getting even, and more). The book is a real classic for it's readability and sound advice, and I re-read it every now and then to get myself back on track.

P.S. Dr. Bob, I assume the author's name is not included inside the double double quotes, please let me know if this is incorrect. -G

I think "The Dance of Anger" by Harriet Lerner is a
good book about anger.
