Hi,
I was wondering if anyone has ever had their PDoc try to treat their depression by alleviating the problem the caused the depression. Most of my PDocs just want to give me medicines, but this will just cure the symptom, not the cause.

i think my pdoc is aware of my problem to treat and sees meds as helps to that goal. that is, he understands that it's not a purely biological issue that meds correct and life goes on. i met with mine this week, and we spent nearly an hour talking about my life- to my surprise- and only 5 minutes on medication management. he understands that it's my issues that have caused depression and he's there to make sure i stay safe while i deal with my stuff.

Does talking about the problems help make them go away or just reinforce them and make them worse or make you think about them more? That seems to be my problem sometimes when I do talk about the problems.

You have to talk about the problem in order to deal with it. So yes it's painful, but once it's in the open and you work on it, then it becomes a manageable part of your life- and you no longer have to take medication, if you can trace your symptoms to a particular trauma for example. That is certainly true in my case, I am a survivor of child abuse and as awful as it is to deal with that, all the drugs in the world aren't going to make that fact go away. I hope you have a good therapist if your doc just gives meds. take care, judy

Hi Dave,
I was sent to a psychiatrist to sort the meds side out and to a psychologist to sort the "head" side out.The "head" side was definately the cause but there is *NO WAY* I could have made any progress whatsoever with the psychologist without having the good luck of finding meds that alleviated the severity of my panic and depression.
Rational Emotive Behavioural Therapy [for the head] and Zyban&reboxetine have helped me a lot. I think either one by themselves would have failed miserably.
Good luck with your recovery,
pete.
