Pre-menstrual nuclear meltdown .......HELP!

Posted by Sarah T. on January 15, 2006, at 1:50:20

OK, I stole that phrase from a Woody Allen movie because it perfectly describes what I'm going through now. This is the WORST PMS I've ever had. I took my magnesium glycinate a little while ago, and it is helping, but not enough. This month, I need industrial strength magnesium. I'm going mad. Any suggestions?

Hi LegWarmers,

Thank you for your post. Relief came today -- thank Heavens! Yesterday was an absolute horror. NOTHING helped. Exercise usually does help me, and I did work out yesterday, but not even my daily workout helped. After my workout, I ate one of those dark chocolate Dove bars, thinking that the sugar, fat, and PEA might help. No such luck. I felt as if I was going out of my mind and as if I had to jump out of my skin. And then, something just snapped, and relief came. My PMS is often worse in the winter, just like my depressions.

hi Sarah,
do you get cramps, crankiness, anxiety, or different symptoms? I usually get AWFUL cramps, and exercise does seem to help. Caffeine helps a bit too - if I have a soda or coffee or two, as well as 2-3 Advils before the cramps get horrible.

Sometimes, though, only time helps.

How does magnesium help?

I've had some psychologists swear by evening primrose oil. i think you need to take it regularly though so that it builds up in your system. it is supposed to help with aches, cramps, depressed feeling, bloating, and depression mid-cycle etc

I took it for a couple months and it did seem to help me out.

but i find it hard to take pills regularly...

Exercise during PMS and during the actual thing is almost impossible. I persevere but I feel worse after. Cramps are worse and my whole body becomes stupidly and absolutely sluggish!!

Dove chocolate? Dove is a soap where I am :)

I undergo a complete personality change for 2 weeks out of every month and no amount of natural supplements, support groups, hormonal supplements, and a healthy dose of a non-understanding husband (go figure) - seems to help.

I wish I didn't have to bother with it all.

Hi JenStar,

I get a variety of symptoms. Some months I get all of the symptoms; at other times just a few symptoms predominate. I seem to be more prone to severe cramps when the weather is cold and damp, but it might not have anything to do with the temperature or humidity. It occurred to me that since the weather is usually cold and damp during the winter, when I'm more depressed anyway, the worsened PMS may be related to the lack of light or melatonin.

The PMS crankiness is pretty consistent from month to month. Sometimes, like the other day, it is absolutely unbearable. I really felt as if I had to jump out of my skin.

The Magnesium (I've been using Magnesium glycinate) is calming for me. I take it at night because if I take it during the day or too late at night, I feel sluggish all day. The Magnesium seems to help the premenstrual tension and irritability, although nothing helped this month.

A few years ago, Prozac/fluoxetine was re-named Sarafem and marketed for use during severe bouts of PMS. Unfortunately, serotonin reuptake inhibitors are not my cup of tea, and I actually get MORE depressed if I take ssri's during the luteal phase of my cycle.

Thanks so much for your help.

Sarah

Hi alexandra,

Thanks for your reply. I have tried evening primrose oil. I can't tell whether it helps or not, but I take it during the second half of my cycle. How many milligrams do you take?

Hi Sabrina,

I love the name Sabrina, and I love the movie -- both versions.

When I read your post, it sounded a lot like me. Sometimes exercise helps a bit, and magnesium glycinate can take the edge off some of the irritability, but I haven't found anything, traditional or alternative, physical or mental, that really helps. The person who finds a cure for PMS should get the Nobel Prize.

Dove is a soap, but there is also a chocolate named Dove. It is available in either dark chocolate (YUM!) or milk chocolate.

Thank you so much for your reply post Sarah!

If I were to have had a daughter - I would have called her Sabrina.

Ah. Apparantly it is one of those things that needs to be taken daily in order to build up in your system over time.

My psychologist suggested I get the 1,000mg (I think mg is right) capsules. Take 3 per day for one month. Then after one month go down to 2 per day. Stick with that for AT LEAST one month. See whether I could drop down to one per day, or whether I needed to stick with two.

That is rather a lot... But then sounds like your symptoms are fairly severe...
