I read an article in Prevention magazine about a study where they asked people how many animals or fruits they could name in one minute. According to the article normal people could name 20-25 and people with early Alzheimer's 10-15. I flunked the test-very scary. I'm hoping it was just due to anxiety-I kept thinking of tons more animals and fruits after the tests were over. Others-try it and tell me how many you can name. Cecilia

I think you properly titled this post. You had an anxiety reaction. The fact that you produced the information later is far more relevant than what came out during that minute. There's nothing wrong with your thinking. Aphasia, the inability to name things, or produce language, doesn't apply to you. You produced after the anxiety went away.

Does it have to be one or the other (fruit or animals?) or can you name both of them in one minute?
Does that make sense?
Let's see... can you only name ANIMALS for ONe minute... then as many fruits as possiblen in the next minute? or can you mix match the fruit and the animals?
Cuz' my word, I don't even know that I know of over 10 fruits to begin with. ROFL

I think you're supposed to name as many animals as you can in one minute, and then as many fruits as you can in another minute. There are a surprising number of fruits-when I kept adding to my list all day I got 29 and when I cheated by looking in a cookbook I was able to add 10 more! Cecilia

>Like Larry stated, there can be a number of reasons for why this happened to you. For example, I did a whole battery of psych testing a year ago and this who naming task was part of it. Ranged from animals to people's names. Turns out I did horrible compared to most people. After other tests it turns out I have Expressive Language Disorder. The best way I can describe it is that I know the words, but the thoughts carrying those words hit a wall and I get stuck. So, for you it could be anxiety, some expressive language issue, or any other number of things. Nothing to get scared about. :-)
And technically, there is no "flunking" these tests. It is just a measure of how you do compared to other people. "Flunking" just sounds soooooo negative.

Well, I had my relatives all do the test without telling them what it was for, and acording to the results, both my sisters, my brother in law, and my very bright 14 year old nephew all have Alzheimer's! Only my other extremely brilliant nephew managed to get 20 fruits. So I think if anyone has Alzheimer's it must be whoever devised this test! Cecilia

TWENTY fruits? My goodness, I can't think of that many even with time! But, I think it has more to do with cultural, social, and financial issues. i.e., the common fruits that we eat (probably typically American) are bananas, apples, oranges, strawberries, pears, grapes, and watermelon (off the top of my head). Well, think about it. That's mainly what I see when I go into the grocery store so that's all I normally think about. I can't afford and probably am not adventurous enough to eat really exotic stuff. Also, does one classify berries such as blackberries, blueberries, dewberries, etc. as fruit?
I've seen a similar test but it asks the participant to name all the words they can think of that begin with the letter "C" in a given period of time. Think it's 2 minutes. I think an average person can name 25. The words cannot be names of people or cities, states.
Just my thought ... !
