I'm a Type II diabetic, diagnosed last year around this time, and my blood sugar is pretty much kept under control with Glucophage.
I have a project that, unlike most of my work, needs to be done at the office. My general way of doing this, since my time is limited (I have to pick my son up from school, etc.) is to eat a hearty breakfast and bring drinks and granola bar type snacks to work. In the past it's been sugary drinks, this time it's diet drinks or water.
And I find that this time my productivity is practically nil. I drag through the day ok, but when I try to do the work I brought home to do, I find I've crashed the moment I walk through the door. I'm not good for much of anything all evening and am asleep early.
Is the granola bars not enough to eat during the day? Or is the big breakfast a bad idea? Am I doing something wrong, diabetes wise?
Or is it just harder to physically cope with demanding situations when you're a diabetic.

Hi I am and am a strict diabetic....sounds like the granola bar is high in carbs and you shoot up and down ..it may not be enough to hold you. May I suggest a breakfast of say whole GRAIN toast 1 piece...eggs..or fake eggs and some meat.....lunch at work....take some diet drink and no granola bars..I bet its packed with carbs and sugar...take some tuna in a can and some whole grain crackers...or get a subway wrap the night before and take it to work...you need fats and protein to last longer...and steady not foods that will spike you..what kind of job can you do can you pack a lunch..?? Do you TEST your blood sugar,,.,you know, you may be going high...stress at work and granola...wow...cheese and crackers NOT WHITE...pick or snack on meats and cheese not tons but...almonds a FEW....even a THIN peanut butter sandwich is better...TEST YOUR BS AND lets tweak it I am very good at this...just need details
hugs

I'm dreadful at testing my sugars. Since my hemoglobin tests have come out grand since I went on glucophage, I don't even think I bother at all. Perhaps I should bring the kit to the office though, since it's such a different situation than normal. Normally I only work at the office one or two hours at most. And when I work at home I can eat in a more normal fashion.
I hadn't thought of a granola bar as being full of carbs. I thought I was being good for not bringing my usual Biggie Root Beer and Brioche for lunch.
sigh.
Let me test my sugars for a day or two and I'll get back to you.
I do know stress can cause a difference, because I wasn't diabetic at one checkup and when I went back for an unrelated reason a couple of months later, after a big project was due at work, my blood sugar was high enough to qualify as diabetic. :(

Dinah PLEASE do check your blood sugars a FEW times a day for a month...I do 5 times a day...daily for many months to catch any variations in them. THE reason this is so important is because your Hb A1C is an average of the last 3 months..most people do not know the emphasis is on the last month...AS IT IS an average one can run HIGH all day and LOW all night and be in a good range :) I may email you more on all later but ...its an average and a GREAT test but an endocrinologist will look at random samples , fasting , HbA1C as well as muliple times a day to see patterns..I once ran a few months GREAT HbA1C's but was running in the 40-60 range a lot at night...not so good....protein will carry you longer as well as healthy fats...like in nuts and flaxseed etc..Test and see what is going on.

I meant to, but the best plans aft go astray and all that. I brought the kit and literally didn't have a moment's free time to use it. It's a good thing I don't drink enough, because I've got no time to use the restroom either.
Tomorrow I work at home (Hooray!!!!) but I'll try again Friday.
