must find this book and give it another read...

"Jitterbug Perfume", Tim Robyns. Didn't like "Even Cowgirls get the Blues" nearly as much.

Has anyone encountered John Barth??? He was my absolute favourite for a while. Loved "The End of The Road" and "The Floating Opera" though I think they may both be out of print.

Anyone manage to finish "Crime and Punishment"?

okay, so 'the end of the road' was a bad link, but the floating opera link is good for both books. You can still buy them, yay!!!

Now I will do a plug.

The floating opera is the first part. There are three characters and they are all different kinds of nihilists. Their interaction is a philosphical / existential struggle, and the novel culminates in an attempted suicide. The protaginists variety of nihilism is thus forced to evolve into the variety of nihilism espoused by the protaginist of the second book. The end of the road, and there are three varieties of nihinism that fight it out yet again. There is also a p-doc, who has his own particular variety of nihilism, and some interesting theraputic techniques. I do have to say that these are (together as a pair) the best novels that I have ever read.

I read "Cowgirls" many years ago and really enjoyed it though it took me a while to get into it. I don't remember it much other than it was quirky, I think that the protagonist had very large thumbs and I loved the way it all tied together at the end. I'd probably like "Jitterbug Perfume" then too.

I had to read "The End of the Road" for school many years ago but I don't remember it at all. Maybe if I read a summary on Amazon.com it would come back to me. It was so long ago that I probably would get a lot more out of it if I read it now.

Nope.

Wow, you read the end of the road for school? I am impressed. In my experience, school messes literature up for many years, however... I remember reading TKAM in 5th form (when I was around 15) and that is probably the only one that even school didn't manage to kill. But then I did start out as an English major at varsity, so it can't have been all bad :-)

It was either for my senior year in high school or my first or second year in college. Wish I could remember but it was just too long ago. Yes, school usually does kill them by dissecting them too much but sometimes it nice to get something out of it that you would have missed just reading it on your own.

I read TKAM in school as well. Also can't remember which grade. I don't think it's possible to ruin that one!
