Will fish oil anxiety subside? Wait it out?

Posted by saturn on December 27, 2006, at 16:51:10

I cannot tolerate rx meds for dysthymia and ADHD.

I have great hope for fish oils, having started and stopped them many many times, but ultimately being unable to deal with the anxiety. Though energizing, in the past they've generally NOT been helpful for ADHD and the anxiety has overshadowed any possible antidepressant effect.

I recently decided to try 100% EPA (1 gm/dy), hoping perhaps it might be more effective and/or less anxiety provoking. It's only been a few days and I notice a *definite* mood lift-- it is very stimulating--but once again the anxiety has also returned, and it's too early to tell if this is a true antidepressant effect or just considerable stimulation. (The anxiety has not responded to Taurine or Magnesium, only a benzo, which I only take a few times yearly if absolutely needed).

I truly believe that minus the anxiety the EPA could prove to be an effective antidepressant and perhaps ADHD treatment for me.

Is there any reason to believe that:

a. the anxiety will abate?

b. that the 100% EPA is advantageous over common EPA/DHA preparations?

c. .5 grams EPA would be effective for mood and ADHD?

Sorry for the long post, but I would greatly appreciate any experiences or suggestions. Thanks...Peace...Saturn.

Natural treatments are so understudied. Existing studies conflict with each other. So, who knows. Studies did show that fish oil high in EPA was better than regular fish oil. Doses were in the 1mg to 6mg range, with best results in the 1mg range. Is .5mg enough? Maybe. We're all different. Will the anxiety go away? Don't know.

I know nothing about this person except that he is head of a natural teaching school in Canada and sounds legit. He's practiced for 30 years. You might be able to add a nice herb to enhance things and find calmness at the same time. Type Terry Willard insomnia or Terry Willard anxiety in a search box. Reishi (a mushroom) is his top remedy. He also favors theanine and 5 or 6 other things. Trial and error. It's just one doctor's experience, but hey you might get some good ideas.

Sorry to hear your problems with anxiety.
Personally, I do not think these side effects will abate. My advice is to lower dosage so you avoid side effects.

I tolerate 600 mg EPA from regular fish oil.
I am very sensitive to free fatty acid EPA. I would say 200 mg or more will cause insomnia after a couple of days.

My experience is that regular fish oil EPA/DHA works best in the long run.
EPA is anti-inflammatory.
DHA is used in membrane phospholipids.

How is taurine working for you?

Hi Desbee.

Yeah, this fish oil is just totally kicking my you know what in terms of anxiety. I'm going to cut the dose in half and see how that works. I had hoped that perhaps it just might be startup anxiety similiar to ssri's that should go away. I can no longer stay at this 1 gram EPA dose. We'll see how .5 grams works.

Unfortunately 500 mg taurine three times/day has been unnoticeable. But this has been in combo with the fish oil, so I can't independently evaluate it...yet. I'm wondering if I shouldn't up the dose on the taurine. Thanks for asking...Peace...Saturn.

I tried omega oils before and gave them up as I felt they made me feel worse. Anyway, recently I've been really bad and at such times one gets a bit desperate and tries anything so I've added in heaps of things which I'd previously stopped.

One of those is cod liver oil. I'm taking 3 1g caps a day which according to the bottle is 120 epa 65 dha per capsule. Oddly enough I had terrible insomnia (only get this very very rarely) and the fish oil seems to have helped there, but oddly it seems to have backed my anxiety right off too.

Been using magnesium on and off again and each capsule also has 500mg taurine. I can eat them like sweets with no effect. Tried various magnesium sups and never had an effect from them, in fact can't say I've ever even found bowel tolerance.
